But then, he's never had a real reason to stop and just look before the handsome man beside him began to make him slow his pace. Lex has never tried to go slow with anything before. He's always striven to be the fastest and the best. It's true what they say: The world is a jungle. It is eat or be eaten, and it is the strongest, and the fastest, who survive.
Except here. Clark is the first one who's ever taken notice of him not because of his wealth, power, or lineage but simply because of himself, and trying to go fast with Clark when he first met him got him absolutely nowhere. He had to wait, to slow his pace, and slowly show the boy he could trust him while he grew into a man. He had to slow up and not do the catching but rather allow himself to be cau1ght.
He's learned a lot and changed a lot because of the man beside him, the man who now wears his ring which also seems to sparkle tonight. Clark has taught him so much, given him so much, that sometimes Lex feels like a brand new man. And sometimes, he wonders if there's anything in him that is still the same because of Clark's love. Other times, he wonders if any of this is even real, but tonight, holding Clark's hand underneath the stars, he knows it's real, they're real, their love is real, and he truly is the luckiest man alive.
Clark inches closer, sliding sideways on the damp, cool grass until he's right beside Lex, their arms and their sides of heads touching. He turns on his side and watches Lex with that coy, cute, bashful, and yet -- Lex knows and perhaps is the only one to truly realize -- knowing grin of his. "I told you it was more beautiful," he whispers.
Lex's gaze finally leaves the blanket of stars above his head. He squeezes Clark's hand as he gazes instead into his beautiful baby blues. "I know something more beautiful," he says. With any one else, these words wouldn't come out right or even feel right. They're an old cliche, something that's been said endless times, one of the oldest tricks in the book, but when he speaks them to Clark, they're not a trick. They're only the truth, and it pleases him to be able to say it aloud.
"What?" Clark asks softly.
"You," Lex answers, beaming. He almost adds, Now come here, for he's waited long enough tonight and spent enough time stargazing. He's enjoyed their gentle cuddles and just simply watching the stars with the man he loves, but he wants more. He always wants more where Clark Kent is concerned. But instead of speaking, he lets his mouth make the actions soundlessly for him as he captures Clark's kiss with his own and brings him back down to the ground, all while never relinquishing his sweet lips.
The End
