He melts at the sight of his young lover when he finds him in the barn. It isn't the way he's looking at him; his eyes aren't even open. It's not the sight of his rippling muscles, either, for they're hidden and unmoving underneath his ragged, flannel shirt. (Lex even offered to buy him a whole new wardrobe of flannel and blue jeans, but Clark declined his offer, claiming the old clothes feel the best.)

He's not looking at him. He's smiling, but he doesn't even know he's there. The barn smells of cows and manure as it always does, and Lex is pretty certain he's got something he really doesn't want to inspect on the bottom of his brand new boots. Yet, he's still standing there, smiling stupidly at Clark, when the younger man's eyes finally flutter open. "Lex?" he asks sleepily.

"Sh. You'll wake her." Lex grins.

"It's okay." Clark rubs at his eyes. "She's well fed for the night. I think her mama can take it from here." Clark glances up at the cow who, if Lex didn't know better, seems to be grinning down at him, too.

As Clark wriggles out from underneath the calf, Lex and the mother cow both move closer. Lex offers Clark his hand and pulls him to his feet, and the mother licks her baby's sleeping face. "You're going to make a fine father some day," Lex lets slip as he and Clark edge quietly out of the stall.

Clark blushes. "Lex -- "

"No, Clark, I mean it. I . . . I never understood it when we first met, but I've come to enjoy watching you nurture these animals." And yet, he thinks sadly, one day, that calf is going to be sold for meat. It's almost enough to make a man turn vegetarian.

"It's not that." Clark squeezes his hand reassuringly but then looks away. "It's just . . . " His blue eyes dart shyly back to his boyfriend's face to gauge his reaction. "We can't exactly have kids."

"We can adopt," Lex says so swiftly that Clark realizes he must have already been contemplating their future together. "As many people as you save, Clark, there's bound to be a child one day who needs us. I'd be honored if we can do half as good raising that child as your parents have done with you."

Clark's face is now every bit as red as the once bright hue in his flannel shirt was when it was new. Lex takes his other hand and steps closer. His gaze meets his. "I do want a future with you, Clark."

Clark beams. Lex kisses him, but just as the kiss is beginning, they hear his mother calling. Lex whips away, releasing Clark just as Mrs. Kent comes around the corner. She smiles at them both. "Dinner's ready, boys."

"We'll be right in, Mom," Clark answers in a rush.

Still smiling, Martha turns and walks away. Behind her back, her son mouths to his boyfriend, "Do you think she knows?"

Lex just smiles in answer. He is very much aware that Martha Kent already knows about them. After all, she was the first to give her blessing to their union, and the lady who had pleaded with him not to approach Jonathan yet. He had wanted Mister Kent's blessing before beginning to date Clark -- it was the right thing to do, after all --, but Martha was right. It was going to take years before Jonathan Kent could get pass his hatred of Lex's family to recognize and accept that Lex truly loved his son and would never hurt him.

Martha glanced back only once to make sure her boys were following her. She had not seen her son mouth his question, but she knew he was wondering just that from the way he shuffled his feet and kept his head ducked while they followed her. Her grin widened as she turned back to face the house. She had many more surprises in store for her boys, as did life.

She'd heard only part of their conversation as she'd approached, but it was enough to know they'd been discussing children. Her face practically glowed with motherly pride. She knew they were already great fathers: Clark to the animals for whom he cared, and Lex through association, if for no other reason yet. She had never been prouder.

The End

Aww, such an adorable picture you paint. I'm with Lex - I'd melt too. I'm so glad Martha is on their side.
