At Clark's drop to the floor, the attention of the room was once again focused upon him, and Dick felt his throat tighten at the looks that passed between Lex and Bruce before Lex quietly knelt beside Clark. He had seen Bruce and Alfred share that look several times before. More often than not- the best case scenario for the subject of the glance was to end up with a very extended stay in the hospital, and that was usually only due to an unexpected break in the case. In the handful of cases where an unexpected break eluded them, they ended up attending funerals.
"Clark," Lex began but broke off when Clark's hand darted out to catch his and hold it with a tight trembling grip.
"Lex, please, please promise me." Clark plead, "You'll take care of Mom and Dad. Please."
"Clark," Lex's voice took on an admonishing tone, but before he could continue, Clark interrupted.
"I won't." He promised. "I won't try to run to him again. I promise. I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me, but I was listening." He paused briefly glancing up with tear filled eyes so Lex could see his sincerity before he continued, "But, if he does get me... I don't know if ... If I can - resist him; don't know why I've been wanting ... craving that feeling, the release of hurting myself and in letting him hurt me. I don't want to give in to him. I don't want to, but..."
He broke off when his throat seemed to blocked by tears to let him speak.
"But?" Lex prompted quietly, knowing the answer, but knowing that Clark needed to answer it for himself.
"I don't know if I'm strong enough." Clark sighed into his arms.
