Go fighting Banana Slugs!

So, at the end of last week, I had a voicemail message from a woman in the literature department at UC Santa Cruz! She was just calling to let me know that I’d been admitted and they’re offering me a fellowship.
So, I talked to her this weekend and she was very cool. She said, quite frankly, that they “VERY much hope that I’ll accept,” and was enthusiastic about my stated research interests.

They’re offering me one of their “top fellowships,” but she didn’t offer a dollar amount. (I am to e-mail someone else about that and health care and 401(k) etc.) They’re offering a first year with full fellowship, ie no teaching, and then another four years with teaching. Without more details, its hard to compare this package to the one at UCDavis.

That said, UCDavis is a more traditional English department and, although it would mean not doing interdisciplinary & French stuff, it would be easier for me to get a job (a big plus) and I wouldn’t have to struggle through foreign languages again (another plus.) Not to mention, UCDavis doesn’t require a car, whereas UC Santa Cruz is impossible to navigate without one since it’s scattered all over very steep hills far from the town and doesn’t offer practical transit options. Buying car? Big minus.

Time will tell. Hopefully I’ll have more options before I must decide one way or another…
