State Budget Cuts to Slash Library Funding

Jun 24, 2009 15:00

Governor Strickland's proposed budget would cut funding for Ohio libraries nearly in half. The libraries in this state depend on this money to provide valuable services to the community and a cut of this magnitude would mean substantial reductions, including cuts to materials purchasing and programs, reduced hours, staff furloughs, and lay-offs. Smaller libraries will be forced to close. This would mean the end of the public library as we know it. People are relying on libraries now more than ever in these tough economic times. For some, the library is the only place to access the Internet, where they can apply for jobs or file for unemployment. The library is a place for children to go for story time and it's a place for people to access information. If you believe in the library's mission to inform, entertain, and enlighten, please contact your state representatives and tell them that it's not okay to cut library funding!!
