Disclaimer: I don't own the boys of 30stm and Eureka is not a product of my imagination either. It's a genuine ghost town in Nevada County.
With a long and succesful tour behind them, the guys of 30 Seconds to Mars were now heading towards the last stop of the tour, a town they'd never been to before.
"What was the name of the town again?" Tomo enquired turning his gaze towards the blue eyed vocalist who was staring out from the bus window.
"Eureka," Jared replied before glancing at the guitarist swiftly. "But don't ask me any details about it 'cause I've never even heard of the place." The rest of the trip was spent in silence, with each band member trying to get an idea of where they were precisely.
"This is like one big desert or something," Tim stated, breaking the long silence. "Are you sure there's no other town by the same name?"
"I'm positive. The directions were given to the driver and he knows the States pretty well," Jared explained. But deep inside he shared Tim's thoughts. The area looked strange and deserted. Suddenly the bus stopped and the guys exchanged confused looks.
"We're there now," the driver informed. Jared was the first to step out and examine the surroundings. The town of Eureka looked abandoned and slightly scary. There was a tall, elegant
building that resembled something from the 19th century.
"Is this the venue?" Shannon asked as he stood next to his brother.
"Well it says Eureka Opera House up there, doesn't it?" Jared said and pointed towards the slightly worn out sign. Shannon looked up and then nodded in response. "I'm just worried about the sheer emptiness of this place."
"You're not the only one, bro," Shannon said quietly as he looked around. "Shall we go inside and take a look?"
"Sure," Jared agreed. "Tomo! Tim! Come on." The brothers entered the building with their bandmates not so far behind.
The floor creaked beneath their feet and they saw a few rats roaming in the dark corners of the hallway.
"This is by far the creepiest venue I've seen," Tomo thought out loud. He nearly stepped on one of the rats and he cringed when he saw the filthy-looking creature. "Was that blood on it's fur?" Tim eyes widened a little.
"Don't panic. Maybe it was in a fight with another rat," Shannon comforted with a touch of humor in his voice.
"I hope you're right," Tomo said quietly while making sure he wouldn't be stepping on anything else.
When they reached the performance room, their jaws almost dropped. It was a huge room with rows and rows of seats, all the way to the ceiling. The stage itself looked very old-fashioned and dramatic.
"You must be the group," a posh voice, blended with a Southern accent, exclaimed. The guys turned their heads to look at the rather short, darkhaired man with a set of stylish clothes on his chubby figure. He reached out his hand to greet them all with a shake. "My name is Rupert Shaughnessy. We've been waiting for you. The girls and boys are beyond excited to see you perform."
"So there are people living in this town after all?" Shannon asked in slight relief. Rupert nodded with a set of snow white teeth glowing in an eager smile. Tomo and Tim exchanged slightly amused looks.
"The population is 650. This used to be a busy town but then we experienced great problems with the mining industry and people just left..Some of us stayed and we're never leaving this lovely ol' town..," Rupert explained. "Come with me. I'll take you to the 'backstage' area."
He turned his gaze towards the band member's hands, frowning at the lack of luggage.
"Where are your instruments?" he asked.
"The crew offered to carry them inside," Jared replied. Rupert smiled in his wicked way again and started toddling towards the stage.
"Is it just me or is that Rupert really effin' strange?" Tim said quietly.
"I was just thinking the same, Tim," Shannon stated.
A couple of hours later the band was almost ready to go on stage. Their instruments were tested and set up in their rightful places.
After hearing a strange rattling noise from behind the curtain, Shannon decided to take a little peek into the crowd. His eyes widened as he saw the amount of people flooding into the lower and upper seat rows.
"Jay, you're not gonna believe this," he stated. Jared put the Artemis down for a while and walked up to his older brother. He peeked through the curtain and his reaction was similar to Shannon's.
"How come we didn't see any of those people outside?" he wondered.
"Maybe we're going blind," Shannon joked with a grin.
"Boys, the curtain will be lifted in 3 minutes. Take your places," Rupert's wife, Lucinda Shaughnessy, informed.
"Wow, 15 minutes passed by fast," Tomo thought out loud as he grabbed his guitar.
"Ok guys. This is our last show in a long while, let's show them what we're made of," Jared cheered on.
"Is everything ready, pumpkin?" Rupert asked in a whisper. Lucinda turned her green eyes towards her husband and nodded. "Perfect."
The first notes of The Fantasy started playing and the show was only one song away from ending. During the quiet part in the middle where Jared talks to the crowd, Lucinda took a step forward and grabbed the first item that she saw. Rupert watched with a content grin as his wife approached her victim. Right when the lights went out for a while, she lifted her hand and knocked one of them unconscious. She removed the instrument and started dragging Tomo off to the side of the stage.
"Have I told you how much I love you, my sweet Lucinda?" Rupert said. Lucinda chuckled in her evil way. "Soon our dear son will have his life back, with the help of this poor bastard."
"Oh, I've missed little Thomas so much, honey," Lucinda said in a nostalgic tone. "Let's take him where we planned."
"He'll be perfectly safe there," Rupert stated. Before the lights went back on again, the couple had already disappeared.
Jared frowned at the lack of Tomo's playing and as soon as he turned his head to see what was wrong, he startled. Tomo's guitar was lying on the floor with a small blood stain right next to it.
But the weird events just continued when the crowd was suddenly filled with rats and all the people were gone. Tim wasn't impressed by the sight 'cause he was not a fan of rats.
"What the fuck is going on here?" Jared snapped. "Who are you people? Where's Tomo?" The rats made a cackling sound before making their way outside.
"Ok this is fucked up," Tim said as he angrily took off his bass. Shannon threw his drumsticks to the ground and stormed off the stage. "Where are you going Shan?"
"To find Tomo before those sick bastards do something to him," Shannon replied.
"Not without us," Jared said as he went on to follow his older brother. Tim ran after them.
