Love Unsought
"Love sought is good, but given unsought is better."
- William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night
Once upon a time, I tried to make you think you meant nothing to me. You were another mark, another poor fool who got between me and wealth.
Once upon a time, I tried to make you think you meant nothing to me. You were a thief and a liar, and an unwelcome obstacle between me and Atlantis.
You were a lot smarter than I thought, and saw past my lies and flirtations. In the end, I escaped with only slightly-wounded pride, but curiously unsatisfied that I hadn't had the chance to get to know you better.
You were more clever than I thought, and kept me on edge and confused. In the end, you escaped having gained nothing new, but a part of me felt that maybe I'd lost something that could have been good.
When next we met, I once again tried to maintain that you were nothing: another pawn in my game, a means to an end. I didn't need a complication in my life, but somewhere between a burning altar and a planet full of dying people, things began to change.
When next you crashed into my life, you were once again putting yourself in my way: the thorn in my side, the hurdle between me and what I perceived to be my destiny. I didn't want to care for you, but between your death at Ver Eger and the struggle to save the lives of Qetesh's former slaves, things began to change.
Was I the one who changed, or did you?
Was it both of us?
You put up with me, and I didn't make it easy for you.
You challenged me... you kept me grounded.
You showed me there was still good in the galaxy.
You showed me there was still good in my life.
You taught me I could trust in others.
You taught me to believe in myself again.
You gave me a home, and a purpose in life.
You taught me to appreciate what I had.
Before I met you, I had nothing.
Now, together, we have everything.
