Admitting Defeat
"Don't you ever give up?"
"Not until I'm dead... and sometimes, not even then."
Daniel was not the sort of man to give up easily, as in his line of work, "giving up" usually meant a death sentence. And, since death was something that had a fortunate tendency to not stick with him, that made giving up a rather futile endeavor. Why give up when you were just going to have to try again anyway?
There were some times, though, when giving up meant putting an end to a long, unwinnable conflict. Decades ago, he gave up on his academic reputation, knowing that he couldn't keep it and maintain his self-respect. Fortunately, that had turned out well enough in the end, and he was certain he would one day be vindicated, even though it might not be within his lifetime.
Other battles were easier to give up on than to wage endlessly: watching The Simpsons while at Jack's... letting Sam have his last chocolate bar certain times a month... teaching Teal'c to "act casual".
Sitting in Il Fiore Bianco, Daniel looked across the table, smiled at his wife of five years, and finally admitted defeat.
"It definitely was a date."
