The main thing I took from the finale (and the BSG one): Suddenly I REALLY appreciate the, simplicity seems too mean but that's what it is, of the Buffy finale a lot more than I did when that aired. No last second piece of information that completely turns everything on its head and leaves you going "Wait...what?"
I have the same opinion of the Paolo/Nikki and Tattoo episodes. Paolo/Nikki seemed to know and accept that it was kind of pointless while Tattoo was playing everything utterly straight.
Am I hallucinating again, or did Darlton recently confess that the Bai Ling episode was bad on purpose because they were trying to get the network to give them an end date and wanted to show just how bad the filler was going to get if they had to pad any further?
Oh man. I still hate that episode like a hating thing, but I'm actually lol-ing that Darlton 1) decided to make a purposely bad episode to prove a point; 2) thought to themselves, "This isn't awful enough yet. We need something else to put it over the top. Something like... Bai Ling"; 3) ACTUALLY GOT BAI LING.
That is absolutely diabolical. Hilarious, yes, but diabolical. I love/hate them more than ever.
[English major] "Simplicity" isn't mean. I think people think it is because "simplistic" means "too simple, to the point of being dumbed down," and a lot of people confuse the two words. But "simplicity" just means that something is straightforward and not complex, and there's nothing wrong with that. [/English major]
Buffy was less mystery heavy than Lost, but, yeah, I know what you mean. I think the Buffy finale feels simpler because by the final episode all the pieces are in place- the board is completely set up, the finale just plays out the end of the game. Lost (and BSG as well) were still sort of adding pieces and hell, changing the board, right up to the very end. That's just not as satisfying (on a plot level).
Like, I thought the alt universe was actually that- an alternate universe, and that Desmond was getting everyone together to do something that would effect the island universe... but then at the last moment it turns out the alt is just heaven's waiting room. It's like you set up a game of chess and then looked down and realized the chess board had been swapped out for a Sorry! board. WHAT.
