Where did I put my POTO icon?

HEY! HEY! You know how I posted that thing about the POTO sequel last night? They're basing it on The Phantom of Manhattan, with various comments on the previous entry offering... tantalizing (?) details:Let's just say it involves amusement parks, an precocious boy-child (and I'm not referring to Raoul) and a cameo by Teddy Roosevelt ( Read more... )

stage and theater, wtf, phantom of the opera, movies

The Phantom of Manhatten? But that book was BAD.

It could be worse. It could be one of the Sherlock Holmes/PTO crossovers. Either one. Doesn't matter which.

And I'm not sure if Susan Kay would be a better choice, either (though it would take a LOT of twisting to make a sequel.)

Sometimes I love the public domain. Sometimes I really understand where Disney is coming from every time they go to court.

Holmes/POTO crossovers?

I really don't understand why I'm surprised. I shouldn't be.

... My heart now deeply desires to know more about these Holmes/Phantom crossovers. They sound epic.

Ironically I've got Angel of the Opera by Sam Siciliano checked out from the library right now. I saw it on the shelf and was like "what abomination against God and man do we have here?" Naturally my next move was greedily add it to the book pile.

There's also The Canary Trainer by Nicholas Meyers which I HAVE read and was distinctly unimpressed by. Taste the rainbow of awfulness

I love that people have this deep instinct to crossover pretty much every Victorian/Gothic character ever. It makes so much sense on one level, and yet the results nearly always end up so deliciously cracktastic.

"Angel of the Opera" and "The Canary Trainer." IIRC, the former is better than the latter. Which is not saying much. I believe that it involves Irene Adler in addition to Holmes. And one involves the Phantom surviving and ending up with (wait for it) a blind girl.

Yeah.

Of course it involves Irene Adler. *eyeroll*

I'll never understand the fascination.

You know, I vastly prefer Irene Adler as this one-off character in Holmes' past who never turns up again. It drives me nuts when people try to bring her back or expand her role or whatever. I'm not saying I feel that way about all minor character anywhere ever, but for some reason, I just love Irene Adler as this one-time thing that he never mentions--or wants to mention--again.

Have you heard the theory that he actually married her in secret in "A Scandal in Bohemia" and various references to their married life are encoded in the stories? It's completely crazycakes. It also presumes a great deal more attention to detail and general care than I really feel like Conan Doyle put into the stories himself. In fact, I'm pretty sure the Holmes fandom has put way more thought into THE CANON OMG than ACD ever did.

I agree on all counts. I quite like Adler's role in the canon, so it's not that I dislike her character, but it seems to me that her prevalence in pastiches and adaptations defeats her whole purpose.

I have heard that marriage theory, actually, despite only lurking occasionally at various sites and comms! The fandom's never managed to entice me much. (Though I *really* do love me some Holmes; I got a gorgeous leather-bound omnibus edition for Christmas!)

I'm pretty sure the Holmes fandom has put way more thought into THE CANON OMG than ACD ever did.

Ah, well, could be said about any fandom really, eh?

Yeah, I have my three huge annotated volumes that I love. But the SRS BSNS people kind of scare me.

I wonder why Holmes/POTO crossovers are prevelent? Are the fanbases similar, I wonder? I happen to love both characters deeply, but much like chocolate and shrimp sushi, that does not mean two things that I love should be served together.
