So I woke this morning with great trepidation, because I knew it would be a momentous day, possibly including a great deal of family strife. Most of it coming from one person in particular--someone with a really, really bad temper. I mean... she's thrown things before. And she's been more volatile than ever recently. In the end, though, I was just going to have to bite the bullet and face the music and whatever else you want to throw in there, because there was no way around it:
"Hey guys," I said with forced casualness. "Can you move over a little?"
"EEEEEEEEEE," said Eowyn, who already could see what I was bringing over.
Anna, who was cleaning her pistol on the other end of The Shelf, looked up, and immediately the room went tense. I wasn't sure how she was going to take this, since, number one, the new arrival was not
Captain Turner (
who she had already approved), and second of all--you know how they say to be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it? Well, I was afraid Anna would not in actuality take all that well to a new alpha female joining the group.
Galadriel glides forward. "Welcome, fair stranger. I am the Lady of Lórien, the Golden Wood, and this is Arwen Undómiel, Queen of Gondor," she says, because she has manners.
The newcomer shakes Galadriel's hand and nods to Purple Arwen: "
Elizabeth Swann."
"S'up."
Anna narrows her eyes. "You're not Captain Swann-Turner."
"No. But I will be."
"Oh... snap."
"I'll be Princess of Ithilien when Faramir gets here!" Eowyn blurts out.
"I am already a princess," says Anna loftily.
"Yeah, I heard. Princess of some gypsies or something?"
Anna--ANNA! PUT DOWN THE SWORD! Aw, shit, now Elizabeth's got hers out, this is not gonna end well--
They stare at each other for a few moments, swords drawn, and then suddenly, they--exchange them? Huh. They examine each other's weapon with great interest (Elizabeth gives Anna's a discreet swing; Anna rubs the hilt of Elizabeth's with the sleeve of her jacket), and then they switch back.
Everyone's quiet for a moment.
"I like your swash."
"Thanks.
Nice boots."
"I HAVE A SWORD!"
No one really has the heart to remind her that it's
Fugagorn's sword.
So... I think that went well, on the balance. Last I saw, Anna was showing Elizabeth around The Shelf, with Eowyn running along behind; I think she's going to take her out to the printer table for some fencing later. I really should look into getting them all some more doll weapons on eBay.
