I thought Franklyn's speech came off as ... incredibly cowardly, actually, like he was desperate to impress Hannibal. Especially after the comment where he worried Hannibal was disappointed he didn't turn Tobias in.

I don't know, I didn't read it as cowardly so much as "This is how heroes talk in movies and this will totally work." Like a really false, naive "heroism."

Lastly: I just saw Silence of the Lambs for the first time, motivated by the show and your recommendation. (My mom insisted on watching it with me, because this is apparently a prime mother-daughter bonding moment.) And now I TOTALLY understand your reaction to Entree - and why you started freaking out the minute Will entered the Creepy Murder Basement Cave here, because DEAR GOD.Yeah, about the basement in the movie--it's actually pretty easy to miss, but if you're looking closely, you'll see a corpse in a bathtub of sludge right before the lights go out, I think? I didn't even realize what I was looking at the first time I saw the movie, which made it even more ( ... )

While I can see that, he seemed so desperate to correct himself with Hannibal - like he was afraid he upset him by not telling the police about Tobias. Like, "look, i'm a hero!" He didn't do it for the good of everyone, he did it for HANNIBAL. Or at least, that's the impression I got ( ... )

Yeah. I got the impression he really did care about Tobias, though. He just really had no idea how far in over his head he was with either of them, though.

The thing that totally killed me was the night vision almost touches, dear LORD.

That's the part that my mother still freaks out over, to this day, EVERY SINGLE TIME the movie's brought up. (Hi, Mom!)

Yeah, I agree. I think it really shows the difference between Clarice and Will - Clarice is frightened (understandably!) and rational, she knows to keep her head she has to avoid letting herself look too long - or listen too closely.

What I love about Clarice is that while she's pretty tough emotionally , she still cracks the case because she has (often very feminine) insights the men around her don't. Like the sewing thing. It doesn't verge on psychic powers the way Will's empathy does, but she still brings something to the table.

What has more ( ... )

Hmm, I feel like seeing more of Franklyn and Tobias interacting would have made me feel like he cared more about him, personally. Too bad we never really got that (they only share one other scene, right?)

Yeah, I agree! She was a lovely character and I really hope the show can get the rights to her (if they ever get that far.)

Wow, I didn't know about the differences in totals either. That's interesting.

Yeaaaaah, it's going to take myself a while to motivate myself to watch that one, ahhaha.

The really interesting thing about the totals, though, is that they're talking about the Chesapeake Ripper's nine victims who were killed before the show even starts. So every time he goes off and kills someone on the show--Cassie, Marissa, the "rabbit" guy, the four (?) dinner party victims, Tobias and Franklyn, knows who else--God, that's already another nine victims, I think. He is eating a lot of people.

Yeah, there was only that one other scene where we saw Tobias, IIRC, when he decided to call Franklyn on staring at Lecter out in front of everyone. And then Franklyn claimed in session that Tobias was into him, but in retrospect, I don't know how true that was ("I'm ALWAYS wrong!"). So I'm not sure how to interpret what was going on there anymore.

I'm of the opinion that Lecter chooses which kills to display as Victims of the Ripper. Since he's not actually a normal psychopath, he isn't actually compelled to perform any murder rituals; he just does those for fun. So he can choose not to make them the Wound Man or Girl Onna Stick or Insurance Guy on a Bus.

True. And I do think he must be killing more people than he displays, because he only takes a couple of organs from each one to make it only look ritualistic. All that food he serves? "Pork shank"? Yeah, that's coming from somewhere.

I think in the novel of Hannibal Clarice said whimsy was Lecter's one weakness. "It was what got him caught last time." Or something.

What has more cannibalism at this point - the show or the books?

Speaking of which, has Harris said anything publicly about what he thinks of the show, or if he's even seen it? I know he's not the most public of authors, but I'd be curious what his take is. Hell, he might even be thrilled other people are doing it so he's no longer being nudged but the producers to keep giving them new material.
