Hannibal 1x01: "Apéritif"

Oh, why not.

So I've come out of recapper retirement for this because Silence of the Lambs is my favorite movie. Yeah, I used to not admit that because, obviously, people give you the side-eye. (My mother still squawks about "THAT MOVIE?! BUT THE PART WHERE SHE GOES INTO THE BASEMENT!!" every time it comes up, like I should have put the DVD in the ( Read more... )

I watched the first episode or two of Hannibal but it was too style-over-substance for me - though my other half tumblrs and entertains me with accounts of the ridiculous things going on in the story. I'm sure we'll get around to it at some point but it's not high on our list.

I don't think I've ever felt so deeply about anything as I did about X-Files (and specifically Scully) as a teen, though, which is why, I think, that fic appealed, basically scratching a teenaged itch.

I did enjoy Inception, HP and LotR but reading fic about them just doesn't hold any interest - hell, I'm super glad LotR was adapted to film so that I never have to read the book itself ever again.

I dabbled a little in Bad Girls (UK TV show) and Malory Towers (Enid Blyton boarding school series) fanfiction reading and writing some years ago now but have never found anything that appeals elsewhere, and since I don't read basically at all (read voraciously as a kid/young-adult and then have basically stopped reading fiction altogether, though I still write it for recreation) I'm afraid I couldn't promise to get around to reading any recs, sorry. In short, as something I enjoy, have returned to reread, and recommend to others, Phases of Fire is basically a one-of-a-kind for me, not part of a passtime.

"Hannibal" is certainly an acquired taste (i'm not sorry at all :P) of a TV series. I have a term for stuff like this and Sherlock/Elementary: Glorified Fanfiction. And I mean "glorified" in the most complementary sense. They are derivative of another person's work, and by the grace of God actually elevated and honored the source material in many ways. That's what I look for in 'ordinary' written fanfic as well: new stories, but with the characters acting so in-character they fit perfectly in that universe and you'll believe that it's really part of an untold tale of that world. I'm on chapter six right now, but so far Clarice and Dana seem so alive. The Inception fic I'm reccing is called "Fallout" and it's a worthy sequel to the film, I swear. I'm not saying you should read the fics (or watch the rest of Hannibal) right away, but store 'em away for the future? Please consider.

[Cleo's recaps honor the show very much. She once mentioned in an A Matter Of Taste podcast - the "Aliens" episode, starting at 1h 57min - that her recapping work is extended transcripts of the show with lots of meta knowledge, links and annotations, in fact she's basically writing novelizations of this TV show. Read through her recaps, if not watch the actual thing; she's really captured the essence of the show. (-: ]

And I am in shell shock. Would you like to continue this discussion on this thread, or should we move to either my journal or yours? If you choose to go to my place I'll set up an entry there.
