So I saw The Hobbit

Dec 15, 2012 12:09

Due to the computer trouble (see the previous entry) and also my general and regrettable allergy to deadlines, I haven't finished the Breaking Dawn thing yet. However, even if I do finish it this weekend… I'm not sure when it will be appropriate to post it, given the really, really awful events in Connecticut. I hate 3D, and I was not even a little bit bothered by the HFR thing. I just explained why in detail on my review post, but the upshot is that once my brain figured out it needed another perceptual category to go with "film," "video" and "right in front of me," everything was copacetic. Basically it spent most of the prologue flipping back and forth between interpreting what I was seeing as "video" or "right in front of me," but it all settled down by the time Bilbo was accumulating Dwarves in his dining room.

The tonal whiplash thing makes sense as what people mean by "pacing problems," now that you mention it. So thanks for clearing that up, because I was genuinely puzzled.

I am, of course, now trying to figure out why it didn't really bother me, and I think the answer is that the world outside the Shire is just starting to become a really terrifying place. So Thorin & Co. are sort of traipsing through the middle of the transition. Or at least, that's the only way I can rationalize why I had no in-the-moment WTF response whatsoever. I dunno.

The Hot Dwarf Controversy will no doubt be a source of fannish draaaaahma entertainment for years and years to come. I plan to eat lots of popcorn and occasionally point out what I've been saying since the first promo portraits came out: If Thorin's sister had a bit on the side who happened to be a Man or an Elf, I'm sure it's none of my business. And I'm certainly not going to be the one to mention it to Thorin. ;-)

YES! "Exiled Dwarf princess ends up grieving queen" is a helluva premise, really.

I just did the math (...possibly for a Dis-based fanfic) and she was only 10 when it happened. Still, we saw one! For all of... five seconds. =P

Wait, we did? I kept wishing we would see some female dwarves, I totally missed that!

I think they actually show some selling stuff in um ... the city that Smaug absolutely destroys. I'm pretty sure I saw one or two in that scene.

Not sure where but I am REALLY sure I saw a female dwarf who was blond & she kinda had a narrow V shaped beard off her chin matched with a ringletted updo. :P

I basically agree to everything you said. From the HFR to the Hot Dwarf Controversy XDDDD I just don't hate 3D. I just don't mind it because 90% of the time I watch it for free XDDD

That's a good reason! :-)

I shouldn't say "hate" either. I've actually discovered I don't mind it if a movie is shot that way from the start, but I'll still usually enjoy the 2D version more. Mostly because of the brightness issues, which are very much alleviated by HFR, because there's just plain more light.

I really really want to see the HFR version, because I feel like I'm one of those freaks who will love it, but I have trouble watching things in 3D because I wear glasses... If I watch without my glasses on I'll still be able to see the movie because I'm only mildly nearsighted, but that sort of misses the point of EXTREME CLARITY. And if i put the 3D glasses on top of my glasses the two nose-pieces together will pinch my bridge and give me a headache. :( My life, so hard. TECHNOLOGY, I JUST WANT TO LOVE YOU.

You're in the exact same position as my husband. (I'm absurdly nearsighted, but mostly live in contacts.) I'm stunned that they haven't yet figured out they should offer clip-ons. It's a simple solution that can't be prohibitively expensive.

oh i don't get why they refuse to make clip on 3d glasses! like they would cost like 3cents more to make and would save me the trouble of fussing with the glasses the whole time. though the only time i go to #D movies is when we go with other people and i don't want to be a fussbudget and ruin their fun.

I saw it in 3D HFR and I thought it looked really good, though the 3D glasses on top of my own glasses was annoying. I'm trying to think of a way to take the lenses off some 3D glasses and rig up a method of putting them on top of my glasses directly, without the plastic frame. DYI clip-ons, basically. Which would rule and make further 3D viewings much more enjoyable.
