This stretching belly groove does not look like linea nigra. I doubt that van Eyck's Eve is a pregnant nude in the first place: that's scandal. Swallen belly look was the fashion of the day (recall Arnolfini) and Eve is simply "dressed" pregnant to be attractive. In van der Goes' Temptation, Eve has the same look and the same groove (and so does Adam). Ditto Memling's Eve. By contrast, the earlier Masolino's and Grien's Eves are trim, and so are the nudes in Cranach's Judgment of Paris. I think the first one with a belly is

corresponding to the first appearances of this fashion in Northern Europe, around 1525. There are virgin saints undergoing torture and martyrdom with swallen bellies for which pregnancy is not an option. Like St Magdalene

Perhaps this abdominal groove was poor anatomy and then a tradition. Notice that it begins from the chest down. Finding such segmentation on a woman, especially a pregnant one, would be extemely challenging. So it is aesthetics.

This is not the segmentation of abdominal muscles. This is indeed a line, on a bulging belly. It does not look at all like the groove in the painting. Furthermore, this groove starts high up, from the chest. You can see it on athletic women, but then you see other muscles, too. This is a strange anatomy.

I apologize for the mixup of the dates with Deutsch. You have a point there.
