It's a reference back to the original story: they're super secret space spies (alliteration FTW!) and their undercover aliases are Sam and Dean Winchester. So even though there's no one in sight, it's not a good idea to use their real names in semi-public. Hence, Sam Winchester is as much of an idiot as Jared Padalecki is. :)
