I went to watch "The Man from UNCLE" this morning, and I had a lot of fun!
I didn't know anything about it before I announced to a friend I'd go watch it. But even though i was told it came from a tv series, I had in mind an old one, so I didn't look it up or anything. What I had in mind though, was all the pictures of the trio on Tumblr, what with all the compliment for the female characters, or the shipping of both male agents ;p
I had some prejudice about the time the movie is set, as for all movies set in the past, but not far enough (or fantasy enough :p ). But the plot and action made me overlook it by a huge margin.
Without spoiling, I love the relationships between each member of the trio with the other. Obviously, I was prepared for a special attention to Napoleon-Illya, but I was surprised how much I liked Illya-Gaby. I heard a lot of good about Gaby, and I was prepared to be disappointed, but it was not the case, I loved her plot.
Napoleon/Illya snide comments are funny, all the more so as Illya is really not the smiling type. If it weren't for his physical prowesses, I sometimes felt pity for poor Illya. Sometimes, he seemed lost between the coolness of Napoleon and the "frightened kitten" reactions of Gaby. But he also had his own moments, his towering frame and "temper" are far from the damsel in distress type.
I was amused about all the parallels I saw with the tv series "White Collar": in French, the titles of "the man from UNCLE" and "White Collar" are the same, which translate in English "Very Special Agents"; the opposition between the 2 male protagonists (though it quickly turns to frienship in WC); the similarity between Napoleon and Neal Caffrey, physically at first (both were considered for the latest Superman movie, I heard, though it was Calvill/Napoleon who had it), and other things I can't go into details.
And maybe I also was very positively influenced by the stark contrast between UNCLE and the latest Superman ;)
The action scenes were great too. Even though they're generally too messy for my brain, I liked them in this movie and how they were often alternating between Napoleon and Illy without losing me.
I also loved Victoria. Not a big character development there, but she's just gorgeous.
Globally (and it's the 1st time I think), I loved the clothes of the women (in particular Victoria and Gaby, as we mainly see them). I was staring at them, wondering how I could re-create them for my latest resin addition (who happens to be a girl).
Anyway, with all this fun, the only thing in the end was that I wanted it to be a tv series again, to have it every week with this gorgeous cast and hilarious dialogues ^_____^
(I also liked the ending, maybe a consequence of MCU, that attention to details, trying to catch every information ^^; )
