Character
Name: Rena Ryuugu
Series: Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Timeline: If you’re not familiar with Higurashi, it is comprised of Question and Answer arcs. Rena is taken from the combination of Onikakushi-hen and Tsumihoroboshi-hen set of arcs, post Tsumihoroboshi-hen. (Obviously minus her death in Onikakushi-hen. P: )
Canon Resource Links: Rena, Onikakushi-hen & Tsumihoroboshi-hen. Also, Hinamizawa Syndrome.

Affiliation: Rocket Grunt!

Personality: On the surface, Rena is a very friendly, approachable girl. She’s fond of all things cute, though what she considers cute is usually a bit on the bizarre side. She has a competitive spirit, and loves participating in (and winning) games. While she can be fiercely competitive, she manages to keep a high level of sportsmanship. She can seem to be a bit of an airhead, especially when she’s around cute things or people. Rena has a habit of tacking things onto the end of her sentences such as ‘I wonder?’ or ‘Hauuu’. She also uses ‘I wanna take you home with me’ often. Rena is very fond of and attached to her friends in Hinamizawa.

Beneath the surface, Rena is certainly not as stable as she appears. She has severe trust issues, especially when it comes to adults. She is devoted to Oyashiro-sama, a God that the town of Hinamizawa gives thanks to every year during the Watanagashi Festival. Rena is very disillusioned in regards to the nature of Oyashiro-sama, and this causes her to suffer extreme bouts of paranoia. She is can become quite scary when she’s angered, and can switch between angry and calm in an eerily fast manner. Certain things can set off her paranoia more easily than others: mentioning Satoshi, “transferring”, or Oyashiro are all good ways to do. Being unfamiliar and old is also a good way to get her riled up. Rena reacts very strongly to any perceived threats, and it usually doesn’t take much for her to feel threatened. Even something as simple as lying to her can trigger an explosive reaction.

Strengths/Weaknesses: While Rena isn’t very strong physically (although she knows her way around blunt weapons) but makes up for that in dexterity. This comes from all the time she’s spent navigating Hinamizawa’s dump. She has a wide knowledge of games, and is skilled at playing and winning them. She is very observant, and is able to come to accurate deductions.

Rena has a lot to speak of in the Weakness department. She is incredibly unstable, and despite having seen a neurologist and being prescribed medication, her psychological problems still persist. This psychosis goes by the name of “Hinamizawa Syndrome”, a disease that can affect those who reside in Hinamizawa. The syndrome is broken into levels based on severity, and Rena oscillates between level two and four (Keiichi “saves” her from entering level four in Tsumihoroboshi-hen). It would seem that leaving Hinamizawa can worsen the effects of the Syndrome, as when Rena lived in Ibaraki her paranoia caused her to smash up her school and injure her fellow classmates.

As for some more basic weaknesses, Rena is physically weak and easily overpowered if she can’t get the jump on someone. She’s also from 1983, and doesn’t know her way around most technology. She comes from a very small town and doesn’t have a wide world view.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)

First Person Sample: Hauuu, Phanpy! You’re so cute!

Huuuh? What’s with this “R” on my clothes? Aah- “R” for Rena! They’re so cute~ I can’t wait to wear it. I wish they weren’t black… Does anyone know if these come in other colors? Even white would be fine!

How long am I supposed to wait for instructions, I wonder? And does anyone know the way back to Hinamizawa from here?

Third Person Sample: It was something of a strange sight outside of the Team Rocket headquarters. Rena, looking lost in thought, sat balanced on top of her Phanpy, resting her chin in her hands. This place was very different from her home, and it was making her increasingly uneasy. This wouldn’t be like before, would it? The girl sighed, trying not to pout as she stared down at her new friend.

“You’re my friend, right Phanpy?” Rena asked, voice cheery despite her situation. The little elephant pokemon responded happily, reassuring Rena that it would be alright here, even if she was far from home and her friends. The girl smiled, but was still unsure of her situation. Without anyone from home here, could things really be “alright”? And she was sure that sooner or later he would be here too. He always was. Rena patted Phanpy’s head as she thought, not feeling much better about her situation. She pulled the letter out of her backpack, reading it over for a second time.

“Do you know anything about Team Rocket?” She asked idly, sorting through her backpack to retrieve the guide that she had been given. Despite how seriously everyone else she had seen seemed to take it, to Rena, it was more of a game than anything. Thinking of this all as a game was one of the only things that helped her to relax about this place, and that kept her from getting worked up about being from her home and friends so suddenly.

“Ah-!” Rena was shaken suddenly, clutching the bag and trying to keep her balance. “Phanpy?” She couldn’t stop herself from giggling, reaching down to hold onto the pokemon’s sides. “Are you trying to cheer me up, I wonder?” It looked like he was doing a good job of it- she didn’t feel so worried about being from home now, in this brief moment of happiness.

“Well…maybe it won’t be too bad. Maybe.”
