Higurashi's Plot - Wikipedia Rena RyuuguMinagoroshi-hen [ Personality ] :
First things first: Rena loves anything she perceives as cute. That could be the adorable, wriggling puppy in your arms, or the beat-down Kenta doll in the junkyard. Whenever she sees something cute, she squeals “I want to take it home!” and enters what her friends jokingly call “Take-Home/Kawaii Mode.” She also pulls this on both Satoko and Rika, usually when they're in cute outfits or when Rika is in her shrine maiden outfit. However, if she's called cute, she'll become flustered, self-conscious, and blush. As it can be difficult to control Rena once she’s been taken over by the cute, she’s been known to accidentally injure her friends, even knocking Keiichi and Mion out cold.
She is also fiercely loyal to her friends; no matter what they do, she will always stand by them, and love them despite it. This is evident when she and Keiichi confront Mion and question her about Rika and Satoko's disappearances; even though the police have surrounded the Sonozaki compound, Rena promises to still be there for her best friend, and even respects her wishes when she asks to speak with Keiichi alone. Also, at the very end of the first arc, she is still there, believing in Keiichi, even after he's already murdered Mion and intends to do the same to Rena; it is shown later in the series that she never attacked Keiichi, but rather held her arms out to him, smiling, just before he killed her.
Despite this, Rena is far from naïve. In Watanagashi-hen, Rena is able to deduce that Rika has gone to the Sonozakis when she sees that Satoko and Rika's bottle of soy sauce is missing; also in that same story arc, when Keiichi confides in her (and when they're both subsequently questioned by Ooishi), she pieces together the evidence given and is able to come to the conclusion that Mion may be responsible for all of the madness (unfortunately, as we find out later, it was actually Shion, as Mion was already dead). Also, after she murdered Teppei and Rika, she was still able to calmly go back to the scene of the murder and begin the process of hiding the bodies (by dismemberment), and hide the crime from everyone - it was only discovered when her friends decided to surprise her at her “treasure heap” (the town dump). Plus, if one wants to include the events in Higurashi Rei, she is able to easily pick up mahjong when she's temporarily infatuated with Ooishi (due to the megatama).
When it comes to Oyashiro-sama or the supernatural, Rena is dead serious (no pun intended). She takes the curse very seriously, and will argue against disbelief to the point of hysteria; in one instance, Mion has to slap Rena to get her to come back to her senses when Keiichi questions Oyashiro-sama's power. When she's possessed by Oyashiro-sama (Hinamizawa Syndrome), her personality also takes a severe 180; instead of the cute, giggly girl, you get one who is solemn, prone to random bouts of both hysteria and calm, and of course the infamous Higurashi Laugh.
She puts on a very strong front; with all the aforementioned aspects of her personality, when you get down to the nitty-gritty of it all, Rena is a solitary person. She keeps this to herself however - whenever she starts to feel down, she'll put on a smile instead, as “Rena must always be happy.” The depression is mainly shown in her arc - the final one of the first season - when we discover her special hiding place: an abandoned van in the town garbage dump that she's converted into a little home away from home.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths: I'd say her personality in and of itself is a strength: she is loyal to her friends, and willing to do anything for them, even if it means risking her life (as revealed in the arc I’m pulling her from). This also enables her to be able to remain calm in stressful situations, and examine clues in order to find out just what is really going on in the town. She's also pretty adept with defending herself, as we find out with the epic battle between her and Keiichi at the end of the first season, and defending herself and her friends during the fight against Takano in the second.
Weaknesses: ANYTHING CUTE. Kidding. But those will serve as a serious distraction. Also, her loyalty to her friends can be construed as a weakness, as she refuses to think ill of them at all (when she’s in her normal state of mind). With this is her obsession/devotion to Oyashiro-sama, as questioning her beliefs or the deity itself will cause Rena to defend it all vehemently.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
→ Rena loves cooking, and will often make an elaborate boxed lunch when she's going out with friends. One of her favorite things to make is ohagi.
→ Her favored weapon is a cleaver (though sometimes called a nata or billhook).
→ Remember: cute = TAKE IT HOME.
→ Higurashi laugh = you gonna die/get the shit scared out of you.
→ Rena has a habit of referring to herself in the third person at times.
→ She also has a habit of repeating things at the end of sentences, mainly when she's questioning things. This is more of a “cute” trait, as she doesn't do it as often when she's serious.
→ She can tell if someone’s lying or not just by looking into their eyes.
[ Sample ] :
It didn’t hurt anymore.
Blinking slowly, Rena glanced ahead, staring at her hand. She still held her cleaver, but there was n blood on her hand. But she’d been shot - Takano had shot her after Rena had said that she couldn’t be Oyashiro-sama, because…
“Oyashiro-sama exists in reality,” she whispered. Hearing her voice, Rena gasped, then sat up quickly. She had no blood on her; she was soaking wet, but no blood. Looking around, she began to truly take in her surroundings, and tears filled her eyes.
She had memories of this place. They were faint, but beginning to return, and she wiped at her eyes with her free hand. Why was she crying?
On one hand, it was tears for her friends, for Rena didn’t know if they had survived the night. On the other, she’d returned to that city under the sea. She’d been given a second chance.
Pushing herself to her feet, Rena fixed her hat, then began walking slowly through the town, the memories beginning to return. Perhaps her little apartment was still here…
[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : I’m pulling her from roughly the same time as Mion and Rika, but Rena will have kept her memories of her time in Vatheon from before.
