Portal: "Still Alive"

Oct 14, 2007 16:42

I plan on writing a bunch of things today, including my review of Portal and each of the Orange Box titles, but there's something I want you all to listen to, and then ask a question about it. The video below is the credit sequence for Portal. If you are planning to play Portal and haven't completed it yet, do not listen to this video or go into the LJ-Cut!!! For the rest of you and people who finished this game, read on.

1) Listen to this video, paying close attention to the song and the lyrics.

2) After listening, guess who composed the music and wrote the lyrics (same person). I'll tell you it's not the singer of the song.

3) When you have an idea, click on the LJ-Cut to find out the answer.

If you guessed Jonathan Coulton, you are correct!

The reason I present this question is that as the credits rolled, I had a vague feeling that I knew that lyrical and composition style, but couldn't place my finger on it. It was only when I looked at the credits and saw Coulton's name that I realized why. I guess it's a testament to Coulton that his style is recognized enough that even when he's not the singer. To be honest, my respect for the DigiPen kids who created the game went up a few notches with both the game itself and the addition of this song with Coulton. Not because that they got Coulton, but they were able to break molds and commission a song by an outside contractor. Not to mention the fact that Coulton is the right choice to write a song sung by a homicidal artificial intelligence.
