Last Thursday I hung out with a rock star. By orders of
septicidal, I had a batch of vegan brownies to deliver to
Jenny Owen Youngs. A good excuse to drive into downtown alone for the first time, the concert was at the
Place of Fine Arts which is located practically at the foot of the Golden Gate bridge. I have to say driving into the bridge in my own car and by myself was an exhilarating experience. One of the "I made it" moments that I'm sure you're all going to get sick about hearing from me.
Showed up to the concert and eventually sat down. Though I've seen Jenny three times prior, this was the first space I've seen her perform in a theatre setting. The rest of the times were in small spaces like a bar or restaurant. Differently a different kind of performance a bit more distant to the audience, but Jenny pulled though very well. Short set though, only 5 songs including her cover of 'It's Getting Hot In Here' or however the name of the song is.
After her set, I went into the lobby to make the delivery. After a few minutes waiting for her to come out, Jenny got stopped by a few fans and friends, then I had my time with her. As I approached, she looked at me and said "I know you! You're not Mat the Hat!" (referring to the last time she saw me and thinking I was Mat the Hat). She tried to remember my name, but I told her anyway. Then I told her I had orders from
septicidal and pulled out the tin of brownies from my bag. "Is it another pie!?" "No, it's vegan brownies." Needless to say, she was very shocked and excited.
I let her go to the merch table and attend to the fans. It was still intermission between acts where
Vienna Teng was headlining. I did start talking with Jenny's old college roommate who works at a store called
Good Vibrations (NMS/NWS!). Her gift to Jenny was a bag filled of goodies from work. Let your imagination go with that. The show for Vienna Teng started, but Jenny, her friends, and myself talked the whole concert outside in the lobby. No offense to Teng, but I was there to see Jenny.
Not much to report about the conversation. Great to talk to some new people and hopefully make some new friends. Jenny was in and out doing various things, but did get some nice person time along with her friends. Jenny asked for
septicidal's phone number again and wrote it in marker on her arm, professing that she's call her. So far
septicidal hasn't received that call.
I also got a free signed copy of
Batten The Hatches from Jenny, which includes her hit single
"Fuck Was I", and a temporary tattoo.
Had some chat time with Jenny's sex shop friend as well. Lives in Oakland, works in the city. Went to school with Jenny in NYC and were roommates. They recently opened up
a store in Boston at Coolage Corner, so all of you Boston folks should buy their stuff!
At the end of the concert, the rush of people to the merch table. Jenny wasn't there so we tried to hold off the crowd and help with selling, but Jenny comes out and forbids us to help. The two of us then act as some sort of security and photographers for Ms. Youngs. After the crowd cleared, the rest of us decided to split. Jenny had a travel day the next day, so she was crashing. Her friend was going to walk to a taxi, so I offered a ride into the city a bit more so she can not walk in the dark for a few blocks. Got down Van Ness where she spotted an open cab next to us and went on her way.
I plan to show up at Jenny's next concert in the area on June 7th with a fresh shipment of baked goods by the
septicidal bakery.
Bob Schneider headlines at a place called
The Independent. Any takers?
