Today is.. was... my Grandma's birthday. Not too much to say, but I needed to say it.
Today was also the first time since I moved to Boston that I did not watch the Marathon. Stupid work.
Speaking of work, my day was spent doing two things:
1)
Visit redesign (not up yet)
I'm incorporating the same template we used for the Housing selection into our tour booking system. If anything, it's standardizing the look of our special applications so we can modify them in the future. It's taking longer than I had hoped as the 4 year old application has a lot of nooks and crannies to get to. With my incessant need to make websites pass the
validator, I get myself lost in cleanup real fast. I hope to finish tomorrow.
2)
WWW switches to CommonSpot
The big change finally occurred today. The entire Emerson site is now moved over to the CommonSpot system, and along with it a new redesign. At least it doesn't look like ass anymore. Now, I have no say what-so-ever with WWW. But I am the webmaster of
this site which links to WWW.
With the old software, Ektron, pages had a URL similar to this:
http://www.emerson.edu/performing_arts/index.cfm?doc_id=392
The bolded part being the emphasis. Since all pages were passed this way, Google and other search engines have a shitty time trying to crawl, among other issues. But with the new system, 'real' URLs are used:
http://www.emerson.edu/performing_arts/student-organizations.cfm What does this mean for me? For all the links with 'doc_id', they all had to change to the new URLs. This couldn't happen until the final switch was made on WWW. So that was most of my day; I just hope I bagged everything.
If you will notice when you look around the site is that it's slow as ass. Not just www, but admission as well. I'm too small of fry to say anything, but I'm sure the deans, chairs, VPs and others will eventually notice. We'll see how it goes.
