Thinking with Portals
You are trapped in a sterile room of white and gray. There is no apparent escape route within your range of vision. There are smooth steel white walls on each of your sides that reach over 15 feet in height. There are no foot holds; there are no doors, the ceiling is at the least 25 feet above the floor you are standing upon. You know that the room is larger than the four walls that surround you, as the ceiling progresses beyond the heath of your walls. How will you escape such a place? You must begin thinking, moving, and surviving with portals.
In your hands is the Aperture Science portal generation device, the only apparatus that you will need to escape the seemingly inescapable scenario you are in. With this sterile white device you have the ability to generate two different and connected portals, one blue and one orange. The blue portal, fired against a wall with the right portal trigger will alone do little more than generate a blue oval on the wall, just larger than a six foot tall man. If you leave your blue portal against this wall and fire your orange portal with the left portal trigger against the opposing wall, you will notice that not only do you now have two six foot tall ovals on your walls. The blue haze that was the original portal is now a clear visual gateway that allows you to see your back, as you look through the blue portal and simultaneously look out of the orange portal. This mentally stimulating experience must however now be taken to a far more practical level. Moving forward please step through the portal at a moderate pace, so that you may keep your physical stability though this initial experiment. You will notice that as you step through the blue portal that you begin to notice your feet lading on the floor just outside of the orange portal on the other side of the room. What goes in one side of the portals comes out the other at the velocity that it entered the opposite portal. For example you went in walking slowly and came out at the exact same pace. If you were to run into the blue portal you would be running as you left the orange portal. Please note that there is a slight immeasurable discrepancy between the time you enter one portal and leave that other. However this slight issue is only noticeable by the human brain in the most extreme of situations. Another important fact of the Aperture Science portal creation device is that only two portals one blue and one orange may be in existence at one time. If a new blue portal is created then the previous blue portal is erased. This same rule applies for the orange portals as well. The basic functions of the Aperture Science portal creation device are now apparent to you.
Now that you’ve gained an idea of what the Aperture Science portal creation device does and how its basic functions work your ready to learn the finer points of its use and application. Let’s examine the scenario described before. You are contained within four walls of white steel walls that reach a height of 15 ft. each. There is no possible way to scale these walls as they are without imperfections and have a slick surface. Alone without adequate equipment this obstacle would be insurmountable, but with the Aperture Science portal creation device difficult problems are solved with ease. Placing one portal on the wall opposing you and placing one portal on the ceiling, well away from your confinement cubicle creates a clear path out of your imprisonment. Please note that falling from certain heights by exiting portals placed on ceilings may cause undesirable results upon impact. Let’s examine another scenario were the Aperture Science portal creation devices usefulness is show. Ahead of you is another insurmountable 15 ft. wall made of the same familiar smooth white steel. Unfortunately the ceiling an opposing walls of the room that is the desired destination are not smooth vertical or horizontal surfaces; meaning that the portals that formed against surfaces before will not generate on these surfaces. Behind you however the walls do extend up to 25 feet to the ceiling above. One may ask how such a task may be accomplished. The solution is a simple application of the basic properties of momentum. The 25 ft. tall wall opposing the wall you need to mount is a smooth surface that will accept the creation of portals. Placing a portal near the full height of the wall opposing your target wall and a portal on any one of the walls around you will allow you to see your goal over your target wall. However one will notice that evening running the average full speed of the average male you will not reach the other side of the target wall before falling again on your current side. If you will remember from before that what goes in one side of the portals comes out the other at the velocity that it entered the opposite portal. Then the issue begins to become far less complicated. For the sake of clarity let us refer to the portal opposing the target wall the “blue” portal and the portal that we are initially entering the “orange” portal. Entering the orange portal one then leaves the blue portal at the same velocity that they entered. However if one were to fire the “orange” portal trigger directly into the floor that they are descending quickly to, you will notice that they have now taken the falling energy or momentum that they gained while falling 25 ft. and will then emerge from the “blue” portal once more with enough momentum to clear their intended goal. Difficult problems made easy with the Aperture Science portal creation device.
