justprompts Lies

"He who tells a lie is not sensible of how great a task he undertakes; for he must be forced to invent twenty more to maintain that one." -Alexander Pope

Jane has been telling lies for so long, he used to forget where the lies stopped and the truth began. These days, most other people make his truths into lies on their own, and they maintain the lies for him. It really takes the pressure off.

Example: "Lisbon, you can trust me." It's really the truth, because she can trust him. He'll never betray her, and he'll never not be himself. That's the biggest thing she can put her trust in- that he'll always be himself. One of these days, he will find Red John, and pay back the same brutality that was enacted on his family. Lisbon is the one that made his statement a lie, because she thinks he's changing; she thinks she's changing him, and she thinks he'll end up not breaking the law. It's sort of amusing, actually, how much she believes this.

One day, when she finds him holding that bloody knife, she'll aim her gun at him and ask him why he lied to her, why he said she could trust him. He'll say he didn't lie. It will confuse her-probably even make her a little angry-and she'll repeat her version of the truth back to him, which he'll have to correct. But that's okay because he's planned in advance- he'll say he's only ever told her the truth, and that she's the one who believed a lie he never told her.
