This is the third time I'm having to start a story for NaNoWriMo. No, not starting over, of course... that would be easier, dammit, because I would have it down by then how I need to start. Now I'm moving out of familiar territory. The novel is set centuries later and centers around completely different characters, so I'm really not sure how to begin.
I decided to just use Grey as my viewpoint character. As tempting as it is to write from both Grey and Kayden's perspectives -- and maybe Lena's too -- I think Grey's perspective is really the only one I need. He doesn't know all about Dragonsbane and Dragonsblood, so he'll sort of learn it as he goes along -- but he does know the basics about the war in the east, which could be helpful later. -sigh- For now I'll go with it.
Okay, I think I'm going to go with Grey being a sellsword. He lives at an inn -- whenever he's there, the inn's owner gives him a room for practically free and free meals in exchange for him acting like a rentacop, basically, for the inn. He breaks up brawls and such. He's a pretty big guy, too.
Which gives him a better reason for breaking up the fight between Kayden and the Dragonsbane-hired assassins. Maybe he's been away for awhile, or just out on the town, and he's on his way back to the inn in time for drinking hour (or brawl hour) when he sees the fight. I suppose Kayden could hire him as a sellsword, though not to kill... just so he doesn't seem like such a target because he's got this muscled bodyguard with him. We'll see how that goes.
Will do. Now to start... -sigh-
