The Kittens
The box had held ten kittens at first. All of them beautiful, wide-eyed and perfect.
The first one found a home quickly, and the second didn't take much longer. They were impossible for anyone to resist.
One went to Abby, another to Emily, but all the rest seemed to be going to Jess.
She mulled for a long time over the last one, as it sat there looking at her. She couldn't. She shouldn't.
But its eyes were pleading with her. They seemed say: "Don't leave me!"
It was justification enough.
She popped the last chocolate kitten into her mouth.
