It could've been worse. Two more minutes and she would've spent her life as a joke. Sometimes it felt as though she had. But it was a bad sign to be born a few minutes shy of April and still have the name because your mother had already decided on it.
That was the first failure, and there were plenty more before April had taken enough and threw her lot in with a rich and powerful man. He was single, too. Okay, there were unproved rumours, but people like that attracted them.
It was just one more warning she ignored.
