I am so sad that today is the last day of my cardiothoracic surgery rotation. It went way to fast and when I think about how I could have been doing this for a month instead of cardiology consults for the other two weeks, which was really not helpful, I am even more sad.

Today I got to first assist on an aortic valve replacement. It was AMAZING. There is something so indescribable about cardiac bypass surgery. Just looking at the fact that we cool someone down to 18 degrees, stop their heart, and then stop all blood flow, cut open their heart, fix it, and then reverse the cooling process is pretty crazy in and of itself.

Plus my attending lets me dosome really crazy stuff for a med student. Today I got to close the aorta. This may not sound as absolutely freaking amazing as it was, but let assure you it is not common for a med student to do this and regardless of who usually gets to do it, I had never done it before and it was amazing.

I love surgery.
