Getting there is ALL the fun.

I have an interview this morning at HFM. It's my third interview with this particular magazine. For Me wanted to hire me as an Editorial Assistant last April but by June they told me they wouldn't have a place at the book until January. January?! Yeah, like I'll still be around then! I'll have another job! But I tell them okay, why not? But now the marketing side wants me for a Marketing Assistant. It's a different direction than what I want but at this point, anything sounds better than the kitchen at the Surge. And besides, who am I kidding? They probably already hired somebody else as an Editorial Assistant and felt bad about lying to me because of all the writing I did for the editing test. Hey, I don't mind. When do you ever get the chance for complete creative freedom on a test and end up writing 'Tips For Riding A Mechanical Bull'? So interview number three is at nine in the morning. This shouldn't be a problem considering that this should be the time I get to work everyday. Should.

Dad and I decide to leave the house thirty minutes earlier than our usual scheduled time of departure. This will buy me plenty of time. I might even go into the Starbucks on the corner in hopes to catch Russ Meneve in there writing jokes...okay so there's no chance of that happening since he like just got home from the clubs three hours ago and won't get there until noon, but a girl can dream, can’t she? Anyway, when I get downstairs to force breakfast down my throat, dad tells me the game-plan. He's going to drop me off in Astoria at the subway instead of going through the Midtown Tunnel. I'm fine with that. I've taken the N or R to 49th Street before, during my internship at HFM actually. We get in the car and turn on the Big Show. Joe Nolan is about to do the traffic. First thing out of his mouth? "There is no service today for the N or the R."

Perfect. Plan change! We decide on the LIE straight into the city because after all, we have 2 1/2 hours until my interview. The plan works wonderfully until the HOV ends and EVERY SINGLE ROAD IN QUEENS IS STANDING STILL. Now, I'm with dad, mind you. Dad knows every back road in Queens. Dad also knows how to get anywhere on Long Island, knows every major highway in the US, and every street in your town even though he's never been there. So I know I'm getting into the city by 9. By 8:45, dad has exhausted every possible route and drops me off in the middle of Flushing and continues the battle into the city alone. I get on the 7 express train and give my interviewer a heads-up that I'm going to be at least 15 minutes late. I'm 25 minutes late due to the fact that the 7 train needs to stop for no reason several times.

I'm extremely upset. I really wanted to do well in this interview. I had visions of me walking in there and securing a position in this company within seconds. I could land this job and be out of the Surge by next week! My own desk. My own computer, not the one from home. My own phone. An actual job title that doesn't have "bitch" at the end. I needed to look good. I want this job!...that opens in January.

my degree amounted to nothing
