Yuletide 2011 Thoughts - With Lots Of Exclamation Points

So. My first Yuletide evarrrrrrrrrrr. And it was so much fun!

I had actually never heard of Yuletide before, but then somebody mentioned it over on a Kpop fic meme and, intrigued, I came on over. I had been on a spurt of Kpop fic writing, but my interest was starting to fade a bit in the Kpop fandom, so it was great to immediately have something new to spark some inspiration.

From the very first moment I entered the Yuletide community, everyone seemed so welcoming! When I put in some suggestions for nominations for fandoms, other people in the community commented on how much they loved these fandoms, too, which made me so so excited!

And then I got e-mails from Elyn with some questions that the pinch-hitter for my requests had for me. It felt great to know that my author really cared about what I was looking for and so asked questions. And, not surprisingly, the fic that I received was amazing! hhertzof wrote the incredible "Emily Takes The Cake." It is so perfectly Emily, and it makes me so so happy. It perfectly fits in with the tone of the original book and it's such a fun read.

Writing for Yuletide was so much fun, too! I was assigned astrolatry_fan and we were matched on the Skins fandom. The end product? The Perfect Man (also posted on my LJ here).

I was thrilled to read that astrolatry adores Cassie and was fascinated by Mini, because I was really interested in those characters as well. I had only written one Skins piece before (A Rich/Grace one-shot) but I've devotedly watched every single series and I'm super excited about the upcoming one! Admittedly, I initially struggled a bit with how to begin this story - I've never really written same-sex pairings romantically before. But I rewatched all of Series 5 with an approach of trying to understand Mini on the whole, taking notes about little things that I picked up about her. There were some things about her that I wanted to come through in this story - the idea that Mini puts in the effort to craft her life the way she wants it to be, the idea that Mini has a bit of an old-timey romanticism about her, etc. Although it took me a while to get started and I wasn't sure I had Mini's voice right, I'm pleased with how it turned out. And I got bundles of views and a few comments and even a rec, so I am so proud and happy!

I will say that now that I have a better idea of how Yuletide works, I'm determined to be more active in the Yuletide community next time and also to write earlier and write more! This has been so much fun and I'm starting to compile ideas for New Year's Resolution pieces!

Thank you, Yuletide!
