Shantel VanSanten made quite the splash on to One Tree Hill last season, as Haley's free-spirited beautiful artist sister. The start of season seven introduced Quinn James to us, a married photographer running away from her past and moving to Tree Hill to discover herself and her future. Yet as we saw, Quinn had a year full of new discoveries that took her on a roller coaster of new love, loss, and just about everything in between that ultimately led her to have one of the most unexpected twists and cliffhangers in Tree Hill history.
I had the pleasure of catching up with the always super-friendly VanSanten on set recently in the midst of her filming the aftermath to Quinn's final season seven scene that left her lying on the floor after being shot point blank. Something VanSanten says she herself didn't even see coming. “It was such an unexpected thing. He[Mark Schwahn] actually called me beforehand and was like 'okay, I just want to let you know, we're going to shoot you'. And I'm like 'okay ha ha you're really funny'. And he was like 'no really, we're going to.' I watched the finale with my family and I didn't tell anybody. And when it happened they all looked at me and were like 'oh my god! You're shot! So?' And I was like, 'well I have a job next season but I don't actually know what it entails so, yup there you go!'
VanSanten's enthusiasm about what the surprise season-ending to her character has given her in the new season can't help but make you want to tune in right this second! “It's a pretty amazing storyline”, she says on the way the shooting will impact Quinn and the show. “It definitely affects everybody's life tremendously.”
As one of Tree Hill's newest residents last year, VanSanten was given a chance to portray more than one dimension of Quinn, which the 25-year-old actress she was very excited about. “I enjoyed the balance that they had me have last season and I hope to have the same this season, of having those dramatic moments but then allowing the audience to see you happy as well.
With regards to happiness for Quinn, I had to tackle the issue with VanSanten of just how much tragedy one family can handle, considering we just saw Quinn and Haley lose their mother last season to cancer. “Anythings possible on this show. If anything maybe, you never know what circumstances are going to do to people and you never know what Mark's going to find in a situation that brings out something else...”, says VanSanten.
Guess we'll find out what that something else is very soon when the eighth season of One Tree Hill premieres next month! And according to VanSanten, seat belts should be fastened! “There's so much going on and so much to follow. Every story is just so strong”, she says. “It's going to be quite the ride for the fans!”.
