So, I haven't written anything for three weeks. Oops.
Between now and then, I passed all my classes (yaaaaaaaaaaaay!) and went to Hawaii (YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!) and started my last quarter at college (augh. Augh! OMG AUGH!)
Hawaii was fantastic. It was me and a group of my friends, and since Sophie's family has a compound in Hawaii, we got to go for the cost of airfare and food. The compound was literally right across the road from a beach, so we pretty much got to roll out of bed into our swimsuits and go out and get our asses kicked by the waves after breakfast. It was wonderful. I got knocked head over heels by one wave, which was less fun, but there was also a semi-sheltered reef nearby where I could stand about waist deep in the water and just zen out. Very meditative experience for me.
I also successfully did not get sunburned. As a redhead and a nerd, this is spectacular. I am now somewhat less luminescent than I was. And I have lots of freckles.
It was a really, really nice spring break.
I'm in the second day of classes now. Yesterday I had Trash Cinema and Editing and Publishing. Today I had American Gothic Literature (19th century), and this week's movie viewing is today at 4PM. This quarter is going to be AWESOME.
Trash Cinema is going to be interesting, since it's basically a class devoted to so-bad-it's-good films AND FANDOM. Freaking SQUEE. This is the class that I got into without doing the prereq because the professor remembers me from the comic-books-as-literature class she taught (where I lent her my Blue Beetle trades. I should see if she wants to read the rest of them). Today, we're going to be watching Dwain Espers' 1934 movie
Maniac. Next week it's
Them!, and then Reefer Madness and the Reefer Madness Movie Musical, and then... Well, I imagine I'm going to babble about them when I watch them. Lots of sexploitation and horror and general weird-ass stuff in my future there. I'm looking forward to it, obviously.
Editing and Publishing also looks pretty interesting, although more in I-am-a-nerd-for-this sort of way than Trash Cinema. Dani's in the class with me, which is great. Our final project for that class is making up a mock catalog, and Dani and I have decided that we want to team up and do a catalog of feminist romance novels. Possibly involving zombies. She's also going to be joining me for the Trash Cinema viewings, since she took the class over the summer and didn't get to see all of the ones we're watching; and we've agreed we need to have movie nights where she can show me other movies that I have neglected to see because I am a wuss about horror.
I also established myself as a total smart-ass. The teacher was showing us a magazine article on the overhead that showed which publishing companies were owned by which corporations (Interesting Fact: All of the big-name mainstream publishing companies are owned by one of six corporations. This means that these corporations control a lot of our funtime reading in addition to a lot of the news and...well, everything. HOLY FREAKING CRAP). At the end, she flipping the magazine closed, revealing the front cover and asked "What's wrong with this picture?"
Now obviously she meant what I was talking about the Interesting Fact I have up there in parenthesis. On the other hand, there WAS a picture on the cover of the magazine, and I was in a very good mood. "Are we talking about the corporations owning all our reading material or the picture on the cover?"
The whole class burst out laughing. Even the teacher, fortunately. Dad, those are YOUR genes.
Then we talked about copyright some more, and about
this bit of library awesome. (I boo-yah'd)
I nerded it up in Gothic Literature today. I'm going to be lending the professor the first 'season' of Runaways, because Nico? TOTALLY more Goth than I realized, if I was listening to the professor's intro-to-Gothic-literature lecture right. The professor said that I also might be able to do my final project in that class about tying Nico/Runaways to the Gothic tradition, which...would just be at least five kinds of awesome and nerdy squee.
Also? NO FINALS this quarter! I have essays due and suchlike, but no actual final exams. AND none of them are at 8AM, which pleases me a great deal since the school calendar had me doing two 8AM finals. Hahahahahahahaha.
And now off to make copies of things and get some graduation stuff. Also, geez, I've been writing this for about an hour at this point.
