May 29-June 1: The Postal Service - Give Up (2003)
Something screwy is happening with my CD-Rom drive, and it won’t rip quite a few of my CD’s. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to it, either, which is quite frustrating. In any case, this is one of the best of those CD’s - so it gets a nod as CD of the week (and even though my collection increased by about 40 discs in the last week, I decided to go with this one instead). A collaboration between techno dude Jimmy Tamborello and Death Cab For Cutie vocalist Ben Gibbard, this electronic/indie/pop album really took me by surprise. Its pieces come together about as well as they possibly could, and because of that I consider this album to be one of my favorites. Its unique sound sets it apart from a lot of other less than stellar electronic music that I’ve familiarized myself with (and sampling that recalls 8-bit Nintendo music doesn’t hurt, either). If you like electronic music or Death Cab For Cutie, this is a must have.
