Writercon musings and song prompts

I realized it's been some time since I last posted and wanted to pop in for a quick update. WriterCon is fast approaching and I've been feeling rather antsy about fic because of it. The last few months, I've been a writer that hasn't wrtten anything. A bit disconcerting given the name and nature of the con. I have a number of unfinished fics, some more finished than others. There are also quite a few fragments scattered through the wasteland of my fic Word file. I'm not quite sure what to do with all this. Usually trying to pick up something I've previously worked on feels very forced. I have to want to continue on a piece to get any headway. Starting fresh tends to give me a bit of momentum in circumstances like this where I'm eager but not inspired to put anything to paper.

So, I'm going to try something different. I'm a big fan of So You Think You Can Dance and admire the way a choreographer is able to string a narrative together using the narrative of another medium, namely song. I don't often use songs as inspiration for fic, which is why I'm turning to you. I would love you to link to either the music video or lyrics of a song that you're particularly fond of for whatever reason. It doesn't have to be a song that directly relates to characters on BtVS, but it can be. Along with the song, describe briefly how it makes you feel. I have no idea what the response to this post will be, so I won't promise a fic for everyone, but maybe one of these narratives will jarr me into coming up with an idea of my own :)

Rogue Poet Awards and the kinda_gay_award also recently announced their winners. Both Severed and Sewn and Call it Closure won a few pretties along the way. Thanks very much to the judges and those that nominate stories. I haven't been very active lately, but I have been a busy little nominating fairy and hope others will join me in nominating your favorite and deserving fics at this round of the Fang Fetish Awards.

Back to WriterCon for a moment. I'll be flying out to Minneapolis on Thursday, July 30th. That night I'll be staying over at only_passenger's and then we'll be heading down to the hotel Friday morning. I'm totally excited to meet other people. When it comes to fannish activities, usually the part that's least interesting to me is James or the show itself. I really enjoy people and talking to them and being social. That's what I'm hoping to get out of the experience. Really wonderful conversations with interesting women. I'm also playing with the idea of  taking my laptop with me and posting daily recaps and pictures of the con for ya'll to read. I always thoroughly enjoy girlpire's reports from DragonCon, so hopefully I can make mine as colorful and entertaining as hers. If anyone on my flist is going, let me know! I want to know who I should be looking out for. FYI - my badge will say ClawofCat, so no one should have trouble figuring out who I am. If you care to know my real name, ask away, but feel free to call me Cat.

I've been quite the social butterfly the last month. After I got back from Vermont in June, I had my 5 year high school reunion and found out that two of my good friends are now engaged. This was a surprise! I also reconnected with three girls that I had been close to but haven't seen since graduating. We discovered that we all live within a 20 block radius of each other, so I organized a happy hour get together where we met at a tapas bar down the block from my apartment. We caught up, ate, drank and watched their live music and flamenco dancers. This Tuesday we will be meeting in another girl's hood for Girls Night Out part deux. And it's only 13 blocks from my house, so yay! It's really refreshing not to have to take the subway every which way to get to the appointed destination and back. Easy walking distance is fine with me.

In the last few weeks I've been to Gay Pride (which featured lots of swimming in the fountain at Washington Square Park and wandering around the east and west villge), spent 4th of July with a middle school buddy and ended up at a strip club at the end of the night, had dinner with my cousins and their cousins, had dinners with countless other people (and dropped a lot of $$ in the process), and took a summer Friday yesterday to go to Beacon, NY with my boss on Metro North to visit Dia: Beacon, which is a large industrial space modern art museum. Think lots of Warhol, Richard Serra, Sol LeWitt, Flavin and other icons of the 60s and 70s. The outing was made even better by the fact that we drank a bottle of wine on the hour and 20 minutes train ride up and then had another bottle at dinner with this rocking cheese and meat platter.

Tomorrow I will exursion to the Museum of Modern Art with my aunt. I haven't been to MoMA since it reopened in Manhattan. My last experience was about 7 years ago for their Picasso/Matisse show in their temporary location out in Queens. Wednesday features a Speakeasy with my boss at the Museum of the City of New York. Every Wednesday from 6-9 for the next 4 Wednesdays, the museum will host this party using authentic drinks from Prohibition-era New York and charges only $12 for admission and the price of one drink. Sweet deal! Oh, plus Beyonce on Friday evening. Soooo much to do. At least I got laundry out of the way.
