Yup, here I am again. Back at school for my last semester. It's a relief that school will be over, but fairly nerve-wracking that real life will have to take its place. I've decided I'm only going to take two classes in addition to my thesis seminar, which will free up a lot of my time to work two full days a week, do fieldwork, and look for jobs. Maybe fanfic will even make its way in there somewhere. I'm also considering going back to work on the newspaper, since I really need some fresh stories for my portfolio.
I shopped a few classes yesterday, but I think I'm set on "Anthropology of Trauma" and "Conception and the Fetus." The trauma course will not only inform my thesis work, but likely my fanfic as well since I like to work my characters through a lot of pain, and experiences and memories that they'd likely rather forget. As for "Conception," I just find reproduction as a whole really interesting and loaded and something that is well worth my attention as a woman. The course description reads: We will explore how sociocultural environments rationalize conception, and the status and identity of the fetus. This cross-cultural approach explores how social life and family are constructed in state settings. These concepts will then be related to contemporary controversies surrounding abortion, new reproductive technologies, fetal testing and surgery, infertility and the sociopolitical issues embedded with conception and childbirth.
On the fanfic front, I just won two awards for an older Spuffy fic of mine called
Why Won't You Go from the
Spuffy Awards. It snagged pretties for Judge's Choice Best Buffy Characterization, and Reader's Choice Best General Angst. Thanks to any of you who may have voted, as well as the graphic designers and judges. My most prominent memory about this story was I wrote most of it on my train ride to and from the Chan Buddhist temple I was doing fieldwork at last year. Buffy certainly could have used some centering and meditation in this piece.
Because I've not posted any Spuffy since September, I thought I'd do a short ficlet for ya'll in honor of this win. It's with the beta now, and I'll post it tonight. I've also been working on Part III of my Faith/Angel series, the Faith/Giles fic, and Part II of my dirtybadwrong Spawn. There are a few Spuffy fics that are at various stages of completion, but I find myself sort of toeing them around the page not really sure what's to be done with them. My inspiration has temporarily fizzled out on those two, which is why I've been taking an extended break from the pairing. In their stead, Faith has quickly become my favorite character, and it's refreshing trying out different pairings and new characters that I haven't tackled before. Who would have guessed I'd do Angel of all people? I have a real tenderness for him when he's with Faith, and I really appreciate that type of growth as a writer. Opinions aren't set in stone, it seems. It just took the right character to bring him to life for me.
