I was looking at the various Time Magazine lists of the top 100 most influential people in the world. I've never bothered to look at this thing before, but I can see now that I was better off not looking. The list would be better named "100 Most Influential People in American Media". Some comments:

M.I.A. (2009): Who the hell is this? I figure if someone is going to place second in the most influential entertainers in the world, I should at least have heard of them. Notice how she is nowhere to be seen in the 2008 or 2010 lists. Sorry but I don't buy it. Next!

Conan O'Brien (2010): I love Conan O'Brien, but I have not seen anything he has done in about 7 years. Why? Because I don't live in North America anymore. Sorry!

Ricky Gervais (2010): I like when he did that awkward (staged comedy) interview with Patrick Stewart and Stewart talked about his completely insane movie script ideas. What else has he done? Hell if I know, because I'm not British. Next!

Yukio Hatoyama (2010): His tenure as prime minister comprised mainly scandals and the Futenma Army Base debacle. He eventually resigned in shame. I don't remember the source, so you can take this for what it's worth, but I remember people at the G8 barely even knowing who he was because of the rapid turnover of prime ministers in Japan. What's he influential for exactly? Annoying the US Marine Corps? Competing with Ozawa for the title of worst Japanese politician?

Chesley B. Sullenberger (2010): Do you know who this is? Neither did I. I looked him up and he is truly a hero, the pilot who successfully landed that plane in the Hudson River in 2009. I respect him and feel bad to say that he is nevertheless not one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

moot (2010): Yeah. The Internet informs me that he is the creator of 4chan. Hiroyuki Nishimura, the creator of 2chan, upon which 4chan is based, is nowhere to be found. I might also point out that neither site was created in 2010.

Why is Xi Jinping, vice president of China, on the list, while Hu Jintao is not? Maybe I just don't know anything about Chinese politics. If someone can shed light on this, I'd like to hear it.

Gustavo Dudamel (2010): Who? A Venezuelan conductor. Next.

Jay Leno (2010): Right. His influence is limited to 2 countries and he's not funny anyway.

Where is Arashi? They earned US $161 million in sales in 2009. They don't appear on the 2009 or 2010 list. Oh right, They're only popular in countries that don't speak English.

I have to go to sleep now, so that's it.

Edit: Arashi has two TV shows. Jay Leno only has one. Take that, Jay Leno!
