On Friday night at around 1 am I noticed some kind of alarm in the hallway and could people yelling. I look out of my peephole to figure out what is going on and can't see anything. It tends to fog up in the winter, so I try to wipe it but I still can't see anything, so I open the door and the hallway is filled with smoke so thick I can barely see, and at this point I can hear sirens so I know something is pretty bad. I look out of my balcony and there are a bunch of people out there yelling stuff, so I wake up Kana and we leave.

At this point there is much less smoke than there was before. It should be noted that as with many apartment buildings in Japan, the hallway outside of the rooms is actually totally open to the outside. I figure things are not as bad as I thought before because the smoke has dissipated a lot, though it is still smoky. Eventually we figure out it's just a random bunch of tires that had mysteriously caught fire in the lot behind my building.

I'm pretty sure someone set those tires on fire on purpose, because piles of tires don't usually spontaneously combust, especially at night in winter. I rarely looked in that lot so I don't know if there was always a pile of tires there or if someone just brought them for this. Anyway the smell is basically gone from the hallway and elevator now, so that's good.
