"...we're up and running," Claudia says, as she finishes the Warehouse computers' recovery from Crash Land. "Taking her to warp speed, Captain."
Leena smiles. "Okay. You think you can hack into MacPherson's site?"
"Well, yeah, duh, but I mean, major firewallage." She pulls up the page again: J&M Worldwide, Inc., Importers/Brokers of Antique Goods. You don't say, MacAsshole. "You get past one and there's another one set up right after--" What claims to be a photo of company bigwig John Maxwell pops up, but Claudia doesn't believe that for a second - partly because she barely registers the name in her gaping.
"Claudia - Claudia, what's wrong?"
"...Who's that?" she finally manages to say.
"That's him."
"That's James MacPherson?"
Leena frowns. "Claudia..."
"Leena, I know him."
"How?"
Claudia forces herself to look away from the screen. "He was Joshua's physics professor. I mean, I was just a kid, but I remember that face. He was the one who gave Joshua Rheticus's compass. He contacted me."
"What? When?"
"When I was tracking Artie, I was trying to find this place and I hit a snag and out of the blue, I hear from Professor Reynolds. He friends me, we email back and forth, how's Joshua, blah blah blah, I fill him in, tell him about my project, and he suggests a few ways... around the firewall."
...not good. Even more not good than the fact that he gave Joshua that compass and - she can see now, from his pattern in everything else - probably intended to swoop in and take off with the damn thing for his own use, after Joshua was done with it, except then he got stuck in limbo and she never thought she'd look at that as a good thing.
"The Warehouse firewall?"
Claudia looks at the screen again, trying to bring herself back to the task at hand. "...Leena, I think James MacPherson helped me hack into the Warehouse."
