Help!! Moving in to the world of D-SLR!!

I am currently using a Sony DSC-H50, and I am accustomed to a 15x zoom and an aperture range between 2.7 and 8.0. I am looking to move up to a Canon Rebel XS. Since I am new to SLR cameras, I need help understanding the ratings of lenses and how they compare to the "X" zoom rating used with Point and Shoot cameras. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
