Ever read a book and think, “yeah, this author has definitely spent some time in fandom?”
I mean, common fandom tropes do occasionally pop up elsewhere without necessarily originating in fandom. But still. First there was the freebie short story in which one half of a ship gets wings temporarily. Now there’s a book that opens up with the handsome, badass male lead getting beat up, sold into slavery (as a prostitute!), being tied up and subjected to a non-con handjob from his new mistress/pimp as a way for her to assert her dominance. (to be fair, this also started out as a freebie short that turned into a novel, and the author seems to use the freebie shorts to really cut loose with stuff too…id-fic-ish for the novels, and I wasn’t really quite expecting that opening…seriously not expecting it…). Tell me that doesn’t seem like someone has spent some time on a kink meme or two.
