I thought this might interest you (academia wise), a comment by bentley on Telanu's last instalment of the Tea Series: "You're my canon now, Telanu. That sounds exceedingly lame and denial-y, but I can live with being exceedingly lame if it means that I rate furies and Snarry and null-magic and canon!R&Hr and happy endings over um, lameness
( ... )
the magic had left me long before I even started reading The Last Book.
I felt the same! I was just ruhing through the book, to see certain characters. I was never pulled into the plot properly, I didn't feel the drive like you said. The pace was all wrong, and somebody did mention that it lacked the structure provided by Hogwarts and that kind of setting. Which I have to agree with. The passage of time was badly described, and you never really got the feel of how much time had passed. Hogwarts just created this automatic calendar for the reader.
"Love the Deathstick!"
Actually I'm more inclined to "Love Snape's Deathstick!" ;)
Also I do have to mention, I didn't hate the book. I was just sot of empty and dissapointed when I finished. Like I had expected this, like it had just confirmed my every suspicion. I also kept thinking back to this fic I read ages ago by Amanuensis (where deah eaters take over hogwarts), so it was a rather pervy experince for me.
(disturbing images of a half-stripped Potter with a pink sticker attached on his behind, baddie of your choosing forcing him to write your new motto on the blackboard over and over again) (which i'm sure we will shortly see, once the artists recover)
I was actually contemplating making myself a t-shirt with a mention (hadn't decided on the phrasing yet) of the first and/or the third. I expect we're not the only ones, either ;P
