please talk to me about good digital cameras under $1000 (ideally under $500 but if it's like earthmoving i'll charge the hell out of it). i am favoring canon or nikon. is this wrong?

do you want an SLR? you can get a nikon D50 or D40 for pretty cheap these days (around $500 if you can find a deal), and the 8mp version of the Rebel for about $500. Having had both a Canon and a Nikon SLRs I slightly prefer the Nikon, but Canon is great, too. have you checked out dpreview.com?

also for non-sketchy refurbished or discount camera places I suggest Cameta Camera (I might be misspelling). they have a huge ebay store and they are non-sketchy the way beachcamera and other places are.

i have a circuit city credit account and i think i want to spend it on a camera since i paid off the tv. my little panasonic/leica is fun for parties but i'm getting more into fashion and actual photography. what is the difference between SLR and non? i am really kind of stupid with this stuff considering i'm an editor

Oh, and the principal difference is one of image quality.

you will get better image quality with an SLR, yes.

Yeah, it is.

Essentially, the difference between your leica and a digital SLR is the same between a cheapo regular film camera and a 35 mm camera. The SLR has a much better lens so the picture quality is much better.

no, no, the cheapo camera is completely hypothetical and belongs to a nice, if rather tasteless, imaginary being. Your Leica is reasonably priced and classy.

SLRs and point and shoots are different in the mechanics of how the camera works. with SLRs you see the reflection of the image that you focus on in the viewfinder, in point-and-shoots you see the actual image. but in practical terms with SLRs you can change lenses, have a lot more control over what you are doing, etc. the only thing about D40 vs. D50 is this--while Nikon older lenses work on Nikon digital cameras (not the case for Canon), the autofocus won't work with them on a D40 but will on a D50. D50s were discontinued so occasionally you can find a really cheap one. I have a D80 and love it. I don't know if you ever want to print your pictures, but Nikons don't have an 8megapixel model--they jumped from 6.3 to 10. Canons have an 8 megapixel rebel.

I've been using the 10mp Rebel for my last few sets of pictures. I like it a whole bunch.

It seems to be a really popular camera for people who are just beginning to try "real" photography.
