DEVELOPMENT & PEACE STUDENT DAY '08.
" Yo, look at me right now, what do you see?
You see an Asian, stereotypically yellow as pee.
But I’m here today, to wash some of that away,
Because not every single asian walks the same way.
You look at me and 3 things probably come to your mind:
Math, rice, and a brain of superhuman kind.
The music I listen to? Probably some Korean pop band,
But I hate those so much, I truly am not one of their fans.
You may not see it past my glasses and waxed hair,
But I want to tell you something, something I want to share.
I am a fan of hip hop, of peace, love, unity, having fun.
And yes I know those are the lyrics of KRS One.
None of that mainstream shit about sex, drugs and guns,
I dig underground for my tracks and that’s a fact!
So next time you see me, don’t stereotype,
Cause I’m not that great at math and kung-fu is overhyped.
I’m not related to the next asian guy,
And I can see through these supposed small eyes. "

Well we hosted the D&P Student Day conference for the second year today. =) I have terrible stage fright .. but it was good to face my fear lol. The guest speaker (Julio Garcia) was kinda cool .. although I expected a more formal presentation from him lol. His spoken word stuff was pretty good. I personally LOVE Luke Stocking. =) He remembers me from Facebook, bahaha. Anyways, we had four workshops. I checked them all out. "Spoken Word" had students write what they want (Andrew wrote the one above), "Gumboot Dancing" had an awesome guy come in and show students gumboot dancing, toooo fun! Then in the library we had "Street Theatre" which was full of things like tableaus, and there was also a "Murals" workshop with the students painting murals/posters. We shared ways that we could promote social justice through the arts at our schools at the end. It was a pretty chilling day.
