I love how Ben instantly goes into Official Sailor Mode when the General shows up. "Able Seaman Ben Jackson, sir. Royal Navy." It's very much in character for him, really. We know that being a sailor is very important to him, so he does his best to behave accordingly.
They're in 1986? Considering the show lasted past that, it's actually kinda cool/amusing to see it like this here. The timeline becomes very important for the chronological link between this story and Six's Attack of the Cybermen, and I know there's some fics (and probably some novels/short stories, I'm not sure) that explore Ben and Polly's reaction after returning to their normal lives once the date comes and they witness Mondas' appearance again.
I'm beginning to understand what everyone meant by Mondas being Earth's "twin planet," although it appears to be...upside down. I like it that it shows Polly's knowledge in geography. This, allied to her linguistic skills in Underwater Menace, show just how well-educated she is.
So I wonder what it is that keeps prompting

I have never heard of it, and I collected every bit of trivia I could get my hands on regarding the Troughton era. And considering how Pat was and how well Mike and Anneke got along with him from day one (to the point that they were the ones who undid his hair in the first day of filming) it doesn't sound likely - unless they did it for a lark.
"Behave accordingly" seems to be putting him in an exceptionally high standing in terms of companion competence. I think it was you that said that this serial was basically the Doctor taking the sidelines and Ben being awesome, and you were very right.I was pretty amazed that Polly could pick out Malaysia like that, since I don't remember it being a particularly large country

Congrats on finishing the First Doctor stories. You know, I didn't really like One when I started watching Classic Who, but the more I watched him (and yes, after he started treating Barbara and Ian better), the more I liked him. He's my second-favorite Classic Doctor now. (If I only count the show - count audios and Six skyrockets up the list).
I quite like this story, too. Wish it was complete - I'd really love to be able to see the regeneration and the moments leading up to it.

*goes to check* And they do in fact use the same vocal style for the Cybermen in Spare Parts First thing I thought of when I heard Spare Parts - loved that they did that.
So they keep talking about Earth being drained of "energy" but they haven't really specified what that IS yet, have they?Don't recall them doing so. One interesting thing is how in this one, the Cybermen derive their power from Mondas.

I think the Hartnell era in general takes a little getting used to because the style and pacing are so different from every other era of the show. My first Classic serial ever was The Aztecs and I knew that One was a crotchety-old-man type, so I was prepared for that. Still, it was great getting to watch his character grow and develop over the course of those first three seasons.
Apparently episode 4 is the most sought-after missing episode in the Whoniverse. And I can certainly understand why.
Makes me wonder though, how many people went into Spare Parts not knowing what the Cybermen voices sounded like in The Tenth Planet and thought "they're doing it wrong."
I'm not even going to try to wrap my brain around UNIT dating things right now...
I just checked Netflix and I'll be getting The Mysterious Planet when I come home tomorrow, so I'll be interspersing my first batch of Two with an entire Colin Baker's worth of color.
