General News

My Playwriting project is almost over, so I might get to finishing the next chapter of The Safe House sometime next week. I've actually been able to manage getting a couple more pages of it done recently once the play eased up a bit. However, I've also had two other major things dumped on my schedule: one being acting as a crewman for the Fall Dance Concert which unfortunately is the sad combination of Long Hours and Not Really Doing Anything, and the other being a vague presentation for Gravity's Rainbow which we're reading in Literature of the Cold War and is turning out to be one of those books that growls at you and tries to bite your nose off if you ask it to please start making sense also SWEET HOLY MOTHER JESUS THERE'S OVER 700 PAGES OF THIS WHYYYYYY. Both of these things should be done by the end of the week. Should be.

In the spirit of making things make sense, I thought I'd share with you the secret behind Nyssa's room in chapter 2 of The Safe House.

Like Tegan's room with nothingness manifest, Nyssa's room was insanity manifest (I confess that this is a minor spoiler. It will be explained properly later in the fic). As a writer, making a decision like this opened up a whole world of possibilities: how exactly do I pull this off? My original idea had been to manifest it with a physical representation; having the crew enter a room full of giant rotting brains. Then I had another idea. I wanted to try a little experiment, something I'd never done before and would be quite fun: metatext. I was going to screw around with the text itself and mess with my readers' heads a little. The next question, how exactly would I go about this? What I wound up doing was taking random-ish selections from my commentaries for The Keeper of Traken and Logopolis (again, random-ish), writing an original paragraph stream-of-consciousness-style with no capitalization or punctuation, and then mashing the two together. I rearranged words, wrote things backwards, removed stuff, added stuff (including a hidden message or two), until finally I had a nice little word mess to be insanity for me. I wound up adding a disclaimer about it anyway because I realized "wait...I'm posting to places with mods. They might not be too happy about this." For your browsing pleasure, here's the raw material I used for that section. The stream-of-consciousness is intended to be an approximation of Team Fivey's inner thoughts, some more obvious than others, so have fun seeing if you can figure out who's who.

this room was strange it wasn’t normal in any sense of the word it was far from nothing it was everything it was everything at once lights and colors and words and sounds and smells and people and bodies and memories hold on tight or all the world will end and die forever your are our only hope I love you I want to be with you until the sun falls into the sea and all the stars boil into one and explode don’t take them away they’re all I’ve got please hold me I’m going away now and left my old body behind in a field where are we now where will go next oh it’s such a big universe out there with everything and anything in it where is it I want to go back there if we don’t leave soon I’m going to miss my flight oh god help me

You criticize my logic?
No. I'm just saying that a lot of the time you don't really make sense.
is this one of the continuity errors that the InfoText is about to list?
MY BRAIN IS NOT OKAY WITH THIS IMAGE.
See if you can use some things from your little blue box to help the boys from the big blue box.
Ah good morning or afternoon or is it evening it's very hard to keep track of time around here!
WHY AM I SO INTRIGUED BY THE PRESENCE OF EGGPLANTS
NOT THIS MANY QUESTIONS AT ONCE.
But it can't have...37 dimensions!
the city is made out of concrete skin.
reiterated invitation to alien intelligences in deep space.
SOMETHING IMPORTANT.

In other news...

A few months ago, I discovered an interesting chap on YouTube called BrianRimmer who seems to be becoming the new Babelcolour in the Doctor Who compilation fanvid scene (all the regenerations, all the Masters, all the companions, etc). I thought I'd share with you this fun tribute he did to the post-regeneration experience that I've watched probably too many times. There's no real need to watch past the bit around the 7-minute mark where One starts talking about "it's time and relativity, my dear boy! Time and relativity..." because for some reason everything after that is just extended scenes from New Who dealing with regeneration (namely Nine's entire regeneration scene and the whole DoctorDonna/10.5 shebang from The Stolen Earth/Journey's End), but yeah. Enjoy!

Upcoming Commentaries

I'm actually in the middle of The Sun Makers right now because my life has been lacking Leela since...well...Horror of Fang Rock, which I did before my Twitter commentaries even had their own blog. In other words, it's been a while, and her cry about the over-taxed people "rising up and slaughtering their oppressors" made me laugh ridiculously like almost nothing else in Classic Who...so yeah, it's good to have her back in my life again. Considering how swamped I'm expecting to be this week, I don't know when I'll be getting to The Savages, but that will most likely be my next commentary. Since I've only got...oh my god FOUR HARTNELL STORIES LEFT I'm probably just going to zip right through those before taking another continuity break.
