Is it just me, or is Nyssa's hair twice as curly here than it is in nearly everything else I've seen her in? She looked especially fairytale-like in the New Beginnings trilogy, but it was such a high-maintenance look (Sarah Sutton's hair was straight and had to be re-curled every day) that they gradually changed things about it - you see some of the changes taking place in Castrovalva, as she changes out of the nymph skirt (and into Sarah's own trousers) and loses the decorative haircomb she has in this.
Wow. Nyssa's mom is starting to creep me out a bit. Stepmom, actually, which helps to explain the subsequent conflict between the two of them in the same fairytale metaphor that surrounds everything else about Traken.
Wow. Nyssa was already zapping people in her way LONG before Arc of Infinity! NICE.Her badassness explains why she was asked back as a companion, since she was only meant to be in this serial (companions that were originally meant to be mere one-story characters rule, and that's a fact - remember Jamie, Victoria and
( ... )
I like the trousers look. It seems to give the character more credibility as a capable person (not that she wasn't capable with the skirt, but for me it's a bit more off-putting).
I'd suspected that she was her stepmom, but I was still a tad confused because they never explicitly stated it. Of course there was the fact that Nyssa was present at the wedding...
Victoria was only meant to be a one-off companion?
People really seem to have a knack for hooking up with each other on this show :P
The trousers look seems to have come completely by accident, after Sarah Sutton did a rehearsal with only half her costume on. Her trousers looked so good with the rest of it that they decided a change would work.
Yes, originally Samantha Briggs (the girl who gives Jamie his first kiss in The Faceless Ones) was meant to become the new companion after Ben and Polly left, but Queen Victoria Pauline Collins didn't want to commit herself to a show for a prolonged period of time and declined to appear beyond that serial. Because of this, they changed the scripts of Evil of the Daleks so that Victoria and her father would travel to Skaro; originally, the two of them would say goodbye to Two and Jamie in episode 6 and remain in their own time.
I think it would've been interesting to see two companions with an established romantic relationship at that point in the show, although I would think it would have to be downplayed quite a bit to avoid it becoming a detriment or something. Also, sometimes I feel like the Who-boys just don't get enough canon-love. Plenty of Who-girls leave the TARDIS because of a man, but none of the guys have left for a girl yet (although Matthew Waterhouse said in the latest DWM interview that that's how he would've liked Adric to've left the show). Well, for now, we have Rory.
They just had to do that sad dedication at the end of the dvd. :'(
"As for your handwriting..." "My handwriting, what about my handwriting?!" "...It's marvelous. :D" That moment is funny as hell. The book was funny to me. Adric's just, WTF? What's going on with this thing?
Extra Crispy Master. I still have to see him in Deadly Assassin.
Tremas, Master. They totally did that on purpose.
It's always the step-mom that's crazy and/or looks creepy. Always. *sigh* (The eye and choker part made me laugh because it was so obvious.)
Interestingly enough, this was the only story that Ainley got to do a DVD commentary for (which puzzles me a bit, because it must've been recorded in 2003 or 2004, even though the DVD itself didn't come out until 2007), so instead of doing important work that I should've been doing, I re-watched the whole serial with the commentary this afternoon. I felt that it was my duty as a Master fan. That wound up adding an extra punch to the ending dedication because the very last thing said in the commentary was someone (I forget if it was Matthew Waterhouse or writer Johnny Byrne) asking Ainley what his last story was and he said "Survival," followed by a brief murmuring of "oh yeah, that was the very last story" and finally "So your last story was the last story?" and that was the end T__T
( ... )
How depressing. I really need to listen to commentary. It's probably very insightful.
It was a great story for Adric. I loved him in it. And Nyssa of course. I love her all around.
So it would probably be more original if they made a nice step-parent and an evil regular parent in fiction. *laughs* Like that will ever happen. (If it does, I don't know about it.)
Ahum. Comic book geek says that Tim Drake--the third Robin--'s step mom was sweet and reasonable. They went out of their way to have Tim debunk the idea of hating her by having him say "We'll save that for Oprah."
Didn't stop her from meeting a tragic death down the line, though.
The Master's old TARDIS was inside the Melkur one. You can see him running for it when everything's on fire.
Actually Trakenites don't have Earth clocks; that's why Tremas was so fascinated by it, a whole "What is that?" moment. It was his undoing.
I tend to call him undead!Master or withered!Master. Of the two undead!Masters, Beevers is more "hehehe I'm having fun being evil" and Pratt is more "I'm going to rip your face off grrrr".
Was this DVD with updated special effects or no? If so, what did the Ainley!Master creation scene look like? -Arcalian
I love The Keeper of Traken!♥ I didn't know Nyssa was suppose to be only in this serial :O I always thought she was made for Five so they used one of the last stories of Four to introduce her. She is one of my favorite companions and I love her hair. Its fun to notice how much she changes from one season to another. Even between Time Fligth and Ark of Infinity she changes a lot, what would help to explain when the Big Finish adventures take place.
And I know how you feel about Tremas, I've watched The Mark of the Rani and Survival way before The Keeper of Traken so I know who he was from the beggining. But it also made the story more important because I know that was the story about how the master got his new body. I don't know, I'm too much a fangirl of old who so everything is *important* to me :D
Even though I'm quickly loving her even more, it's a little weird watching her because of the order I've been doing her serials in. I've seen most of the latter half of her tenure (with a small gap where Snakedance should be), so I'm only now getting to her roots. The way I've got my viewing schedule laid out, I expect I'll have seen all of her serials by this time next month.
The only good thing about Snakedance is Nyssa's outfit and Five's reaction when he sees what she is wearing. He looks right to her legs and says 'You look...different' XD It's very funny.

This didn't have CGI effects, which makes sense because it was a very effects-lite story. The design was AMAZING, though.
