"I eat" is probably my favourite line in the entire thing.
So one of the resistance fighters is describing the collapse of Earth and One just stands there...smiling. The director should have given better instructions, I think.
The disguise-yourself-as-an-enemy-drone ploy results in a very funny scene in the movie version, with young Wilf Bernard Cribbins pretending to be a Roboman. (The movie also teaches us that Robomen only eat jellybeans.)
The guy in the wheelchair is going to face the Daleks head-on in the middle of the street. This man is truly hardcore. For plot reasons related to the original plot, Dortmun has to be hardcore. You see, originally he was meant to have a 12-year-old daughter, Saida, who was to be Susan's replacement in the show, so his sacrifice was to be both a poignant moment and a reason for her to be accepted aboard the TARDIS. Eventually, the powers that be came up with Vicki and removed Saida from this script, putting Jenny in her place instead.
And this is why history is important, kids: you can use it to fool Daleks into thinking that everyone ever is about to pwn their asses. This scene reminds me of the moment in The Christmas Invasion where Rose tries to bullshit the Sycorax with an equally convoluted speech. Alas, she was not as successful as our girl Barbara here - maybe she should have added some history to it.
a) I'm not quite sure what he sees in her, since she didn't do much other than scream, and b) THEY PRACTICALLY JUST MET. Well, to give the writers some credit, the "marry off the departing companion" was a bit less sudden and had a bit more development with these two (and with Jo later) than with other companions who suffered the same fate - Vicki and Leela are the cases that give me the most "WTF?" vibes. (Also, I'd like to point out something: Susan and David, Two and Jamie... Time Lords really dig Scots, don't they? :P)
In case you're interested, back when I first got my hands on this serial I also did a recap, which I split into three posts: Episodes 1 and 2| Episodes 3 and 4| Episodes 5 and 6. (I also recapped The Invasion in the same manner - just follow the "recaps" tag.)
That line just reminded me of that "im a tiger" icon with "i climb, i roar, i eat, i wash" etc.
I'm planning on doing commentaries for the movies at some point. I keep forgetting that Wilf Bernard Cribbins was in "this" one :/
I wonder if that orphaned-by-Daleks plot was what eventually lead to Victoria's introduction?
Jo getting together with Cliff at the end of The Green Death didn't surprise me much, it was the fact that they got MARRIED so quickly that made me go "wat."
I wonder if that orphaned-by-Daleks plot was what eventually lead to Victoria's introduction? I think that might be a strong possibility. It's such a logical explanation for a young companion I'm surprised it wasn't done more.
