Novels are non-canonical, of course (the origins of the Master in these are contradicted by what we got in New Who), but in this Ian gave up teaching and became a scientific advisor for another government organization, which is why UNIT learned of him; him and Barbara knowing the Doctor was just a coincidence, but it helped make both parties understand each other quicker.

I believe the inside of the jacket can be seen when the Master is greeting the US president at the airport. I remember listening to the podcast commentaries to The Sound of Drums and someone saying that the red satin looked symbolic, and it instantly made me think of Three's opera cape, which also had red satin.

Personally, I love the detail of heels when, as it was the case with Jo, it shows that the companion is so capable she can overcome such a mobility problem. When I did a picspam/tribute to The Curse of Peladon for trap_one, I showed a close-up of her heels as she was climbing a mountain, as it made me think of how awesome she was for doing something trained mountaineers would have trouble doing, and did so wearing a difficult getup.

I highly recommend Terror of the Autons - but then again, I recommend anything with Delgado!Master.

Three's opera cape is one of my favorite pieces of Doctor-costuming ever. There's just something so intrinsically epic about it. Actually the cover for the second issue of The Forgotten just has him standing dramatically in the background with the cape billowing in the wind.

Oh yes, The Forgotten. I have all issues apart from the first, and I especially love that cover.
