Okay now. Yesterday we had the brilliant release of the new trailer for Torchwood Season Three, and I think the squee lasted oh... .03 seconds. You know, just long enough to celebrate how good it is that there's a new trailer, before pointing at the trailer and saying "see, there's the evidence Ianto is going to die".
What?
Now, let's just do a quick refresher. Do you happen to remember last season by any chance? You know, where in the season final two characters died. No? Didn't think so. Because any smart person would know that killing your second most popular character so soon after two other characters have been bumped off is the productions teams way of saying "screw you fans, we don't care about you or our ratings, so there". Yes, I just said that. Ianto, or Rhys and Gwen for that matter, is not going to die in "Children of Earth" for the simple reason that the season is too short, there is no time to establish any new characters (I think they're saving the new recruits to S4), and the Torchwood team currently only consists of three people. Given that it's a year between S3 and S4 and there's a shitload of spin off media between them that won't work with only two characters, they are not going to kill one off.
Logic, dear people, logic! Have you heard of the word?
Also, not trying to upset anyone here, but it is actually more likely that Gwen will die first. It's very simple to explain, really. The first thing that paints her with a target is her age. Gwen is 31 this year, and we know from "To The Last Man" and other sources that Torchwood agents usually don't live to 35, and often die around the age of 30. Gwen has already done well for herself there. Ianto is only 25, and while that doesn't make him safe Gwen is still closer to the hinted "death age".
Secondly, I saw someone have a theory that the closer we are made to be to a character, the sooner their death will be. TPTB have, in the past, given us lots of glimpses of Gwen's life. In reality, we know more about Gwen than any other character on the show because she was our connection to the real world, and still is as Rhys is our representation of that world. Also, Gwen is in a happy relationship, and usually when you are happily settled into a relationship (ie. married) and comfortable with each other, one of you is bound to bite it. Sure this doesn't look good for Rhys, but again, given that theory someone posted it places Gwen in line of sight. I mean, come on, remember Fred and Wesley in Angel? They finally got settled and together, and Fred bought it. Jack/Ianto still have a lot, and I mean a lot, of issues to resolve within their relationship so I wouldn't call them "comfortable", so again those two are safe by that theory. Also, did anyone miss the Eve Myles interview where she said Gwen would leave Torchwood if something happened to Rhys? And do you really want emo Jack back if Ianto went away? Can't Jack be happy for a little while, or is that asking too much.
Next up, Gwen has a tendency to do before she thinks. She acts purely on impulse, thinking with her heart rather than her head. On more than one occasion this has almost gotten her killed, and yet she continues to do it despite Jack trying to convince her to look before she leaps (he needs to take some of his own advice, mind). Ianto is more cautious, and Rhys isn't as stupid as people think him to be, so neither of them put themselves in danger because they failed to think things through. Remember "Captain Jack Harkness"? When Ianto and Owen were fighting for leadership? Owen back then was closer to Gwen in regards to his decision making, while Ianto was assessing the danger and trying to keep Gwen safe. So, in regards to recklessness, again it doesn't look good for Gwen.
Lastly, the whole "Eve is the leading lady" thing. That means jack shit, thanks. I'm sure that if I could be stuffed I could go through all my favourite TV programs and start ticking off the ones where the leading actor/actress has been killed and replaced. Besides, this is Torchwood. It's Jack's show, even if S1 was all about Gwen for the most part. The only "safe" person is Jack as JB is the leading man. Everyone else is expendable, no matter who you are.
And before I go, just have to point out - in fandom, out of these three, who is the most popular, and who is the least: ianto, Gwen and Rhys. Do you really think they'd get rid of the more popular character before the least popular in a cast of four (three if you go main). I really do think they care more about their ratings than that. Again, it's logic!
Now stop talking about who's going to die when we have nothing, nothing. to say someone is, and just ENJOY THE BLOODY SHOW!
