Another week underway completed and we have another short port visit. However this time we didn't go home to San Diego and instead pulled into Port Hueneme (200 miles from San Diego, west of LA on the coast near Ventura, CA). We head back out pretty soon but it was great to have Sunday off. Another one of the officers and I had a good day off the ship.
Chris isn't into going to the bar ASAP after pulling in like so many others which was a pleasant discovery. We're both nerds for the most part and went straight to Waldenbooks. Last week underway I finished the Revenge of the Sith book by Matthew Stover which was a phenomenal read. It explained so much more than the movie could have done and made me actually feel bad for Anakin Skywalker. Well, I picked up another Star Wars book by the same author, as well as one of Marvel's comic compilations from the "The End" series all about the last days of Wolverine. It's been so good so far. I used to read comics intermittently a long time ago and have been more interested in them as of late. The artwork is incredible and I may be going back for more. Chris, not to be outdone, bought five Star Trek books. Oh yeah, you know we're cool. After this we have two more weeks underway before we return home and perhaps I should have bought another book but I had no clue what to get. I may go to NEX on base and see what else they have.
We then went decided to take the long walk from the mall to the movie theater (it was about 25 blocks). I thoroughly enjoyed it because I could walk upright, a luxury the ship deprives me of. We say "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" which was really good. I've always liked those Heaven and Hell genre movies, Stigmata, The Exorcist, Lost Souls, etc. EoER was really good and raised some interesting questions. I also saw the preview for the Aeon Flux movie which has me all excited now.
We got a good dinner (God knows I was sick of galley food) and then headed back to the ship. However, the best part of my evening was yet to come when I finally got to have a long conversation with Tovah. Going a week without so much as hearing her voice is hard and just knowing she was on the other end of my phone in real time was wonderful. We talked, caught up on things, but I then had to go because I needed to hit the rack because I was PTing my division the next morning. Tonight we'll get to talk a lot more.
